Is it possible to have 2 MT4 platforms from the same Broker running at the same time?

I would like to run a live and demo account but I can only get one MT4 to open.

just tried it with oanda live and no problem but with forex ltd and fxcm no luck?? must be a simple fix not sure what though.

download the MT4 setup exe from your broker and install MT4 in a different directory. You can run both at the same time independent of each other.

Peter

Seems a pretty easy fix. Thanks for the info though.

I've installed 2 MT4 platforms from FXCM as I want to run 2 applications on the same account since you can't detach charts in MT4 - want to display across multiple monitors. They are installed in different directories and different folder names. The second install continues to crash. Anyone have any ideas? Is this a problem specific to FXCM? It was actually a forum coment from Metatrade that suggested the 2 installs to resolve the shortcoming of not being able to detach charts.
Thanks

Do you get any error when the second install crashes? I think your best bet is to uninstall the second version and start over.

I think you should create a new folder somewhere else. Did you create the folder in your C: drive? Maybe create a folder at "C:\Program Files\FXCM MT4 powered by BT" called, "MT4 - Second Installation".

After you create the folder, you can download MT4 with this link.

During the installation, change the installation destination to the new folder on your computer. For example, delete, "C:\Program Files\FXCM MT4 powered by BT" from the Installation Folder field and click Browse to locate the "C:\Program Files\FXCM MT4 - Second Installation" folder.

Next, change the name of the Program Group. Manually enter the name of your new folder "MT4 - Second Installation" and click on "Next".

After you finish, then try to launch the second version and let me know how it works! You should be fine though. :)

The likelihood of any mt4 broker allowing multiple sessions from a single Id is zero

Not true. It can be done. Probably some brokers don't allow it but others do. You have to have 2 separate MT4 folders as if they were 2 completely different programs. If I'm up to it I'll try posting a screenshot.

That's exactly how I did the second install. If I don't load any templates or indicators it's fine but that's useless to me. It will crash and give me a critical error. I uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times - same problem.

If you are just looking for detachable MT4 charts try this:

download - tools4meta - Tools for Metatrader

I looked into this. They used to have a free trial but doesn't seem to be offered anymore. I've been to their site a few times and tried to get support but there's never anyone available and the site keeps giving me error messages. There's questions in the support area that never seem to get answered. Not sure I want to buy anything from these guys.

OK. I wasn't recommending them. I just thought it was something too look into that might help but you have already done that!

What exactly does the critical error say? Is there a number in the error line, kinda like "Critical Error 01234" ?

I wasn't talking about the software launching which is very possible. I was referring to the authentication process with the broker. Would a user be allowed to login from effectively 2 different endpoints at once

I can do it with FXDD on a live account. If you place trades on either MT4 that is running it will show up on the other one. I also used to do it with IBFX a long time ago though.

Peter

Ok. A bit surprised by that and wouldn't be happy if my platform allowed it from a security standpoint.

Jason, which build is available on this link you have provided? I need the latest build and not all sites have that. I think that might be what is causing the crash. thanks

OK, the build I provided is 406, the latest build. You can always get the latest build at the FXCM UK Metatrader 4 Page.

Let me know if that works!

Okay, downloading the latest build works. I'm still having an issue with the platform stalling and losing my connection. I've tested the internet connection with technical support and worked with them to optimize the platform parameters. It is not my internet connection as I run a second computer (also with MT4 on it) and other apps at the same time and don't lose that connection or have the same freezing issues. Any additional ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
