hi guys,

im having a couple of niggling issues with meta trader 4 that i was wondering if anyone knew the answer to...?

regarding the MT4 software, is there any way to have a movable horizontal/vertical line that moves with the mouse on the graph pretty much like sharescope? the reason im wondering is because it would be useful to line up price action against the indicators i have underneath...

also, i've turned the grid off atm but does anyone know whether its possible to have the grid as a thin solid line rather than the dotted version atm? its hard on the eyes...

would appreciate if anyone using MT4 could advise..!

thanks

There should be a crosshair near the top left of the platform, just above where the FX pairs are, next to the vertical and horizontal tools.Click on it once and run it over your current chart to display it.
As far as I know the grid is always dotted, although depending on your chart background colour you can change the grids colour or customize the colour so as it blends more so its not so in yer face.

When placing an order in MT4, is it really standard in their system/broker that the order will always come in several places ABOVE or BELOW the current price? Was trying to trade NG at 4.665 using Instant Execution and then the order was filled at 4.7 - immediately giving me a $300+ loss with virtually no sign of getting a profit out of it. Stops and Limit orders in MT4 are also limited to like 10 points above/below the current price. Any shorter than that and the order is said to be invalid.

Using GCI MT4 by the way trading off some futures contracts.

If you haven't already discovered it, clicking the middle mouse button will also give you the cross-hair. Next time you click on the chart will turn it off.
While you have cross-hairs showing, hold-down and drag left mouse button for a display of the number of pips represented by the distance you move ~(also displays price and something else which I forget). Quite useful. Disappears when you release left-mouse.
(May depend on your specific mouse of course).

Also if you've not noticed it, F9 to bring up order entry box.

thanks for your useful mt4 tips, mont, i have come a little further in my mt4 ventures and am now set up with a few instances for different strategies.

the crosshair thing is very useful especially dragging it so you can find out the number of pips in the movement. i have switched the grid off now cos it really was a nuisance.

hi bill,

wrt your question regarding mt4, u dont mention whether you pay for round trip commissions seperately or whether you pay a spread? as i would have thought the immediate loss incurred would have been a result of the spread? i.e. you're buying at the offer but the immediate price reflected in your balance would be the bid so therefore the difference would be the spread to the broker?
maybe someone can elaborate on this?

wrt your question about trailing stops, the default on mt4 is 10 or 15 pips but my understanding is that there is an expert advisor you can run called e-trailing which can allow you to set trailing stops less that the standard in mt4 but your broker has to allow it also.

more info can be found here http://www.forex-tsd.com/expert-advisors-metatrader-4/58-trailing-stop-ea.html

but please demo test before using it on a live account :)

there are several of the trailing stop EA's but ive gone for that one as it allows me to edit a lot more parameters.

hope this helps.
