This might be a long shot, but I thought it's worth a try:

I'm looking for some kind of log book software, which is not limited to text only. When I'm researching trading methods I go through so many tests, variations of code, graphs etc that a simply wordfile can be a few hundred pages long (thus very heavy) and still lack a lot of crucial information.

What I need is a log software that works similar to Outlook (you can just drag an drop stuff like images, files etc) and have them shown on a timeline. I've asked around with friends in science as I thought they might use something similar in their work, but without success. The ultimate would be a text editor, such as word, but where you can just drop a fiel with code after a section of text and the input files etc, to always have everything available in case I need to take one step back in the development.

Anyone heard of something like this?

Link below is to a good piece of software for serious academic projects. It was in fact designed by scientists for complex research projects and is very good for situations that require the recording, linking and access of differing types of data.

Though I use it extensively for academic research I found it overkill for monitoring my trades and strategies - your requirements sound a bit more demanding. You can download a demo here http://www.biblioscape.com/support.htm

Lots of good choices. I've been doing research all my career and have tried lots of alternatives. The one I use today is Evernote. The info is stored in the web and is accessible for storage, attributing and retrieval from my computers and my smart phone.

Here's another good, simple, cheap and effective solution if your needs are straightforward - I've used it for years for its simplicity:

If you like Bill Gates there's always MS OneNote.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, now I have some some softwares to evaluate!
