Warren's Futures Trading

Hi all. I have been trading in the futures and options markets since 1986, sometimes with astonishing success, and other times with abject failure due to a breakdown in the discipline to follow my own methodologies.

In an attempt to improve my discipline, I will be documenting my futures trades here, and will do my best to post my orders as I place them. I have opened an account with $20,000 in capital, and will be paying $14 R/T in commission.

I am following 12 primary markets: ES, NQ, US, TY, AD, BP, CD, EC, JY, SF, GC, SI. Depending on the risk, I would also trade mini-versions of these market (E7, J7, YG, YI, etc). I will be using a risk-to-stop of 3-5 % of my capital on each trade.

My trading methodology is 100% technical, monitoring breaks of support/resistance levels, followed by retracements for entries, then exits at specific targets using Newton's 2nd Law of Motion (every action has an equal and opposite reaction). All trade points (entry, exit, stop) are objectively defined from the price lows and highs on the chart. I do not use any indicators calculated from the price action (stochastics, rsi, atr, etc.), though I am very familiar with them, having traded for 24 years.

My posts will include entry, exit, stop, dollars at risk, and margin requirement. I adjust stops based on subsequent market action, and I will post these as well. I will also include my capital level as I close positions.

Hope you find it interesting.

Thanks,
Warren

Hi Warren,
Welcome to T2W!
I do hope your $14.00 RT is for more than one contract, otherwise - ouch!!!
Look forward to following your journal as I'm a YM man myself.
Cheers,
Tim.

Yes, $14 for a round turn, or $7 each side. For some contracts I'm at $10 r/t or $5 each side.
Why, is this high? I'm trading at Optionsxpress.

24 yrs experience is something worth following.. subscribed to this thread!

Interesting, I'll consider this. Thanks for the suggestion.
I pay $4.70 RT per contract with TradeStation and I'm thinking of moving as I think this is pricey and I'm ramping up the comm's big time. It's the clearing and exchange fees that do the damage as much as the broker comm's themselves. I've been recommended to Global Futures at $3.10 RT and will certainly be looking at them in the near future. I just hate chopping and changing - it's such a pain!
Global Futures Check out the review by Maxima.

Ok, I've gotten my full analysis together, and have alert levels that I'm monitoring in all 12 markets that I watch. I am placing the following orders, all GTC:

Trading Capital = $20,000
Risk parameters (3-5 %) = $600-1000

JYM10 - Buy 1 @ 1.1067. If filled, exit @ 1.1207, stop @ 1.1017.
Margin $3,780, risk $625, reward $1,750.

YGM10 - Buy 2 @ 1116.4. If filled, exit @ 1142.5, stop @ 1102.6.
Margin $3,600, risk $916, reward $1,733

GCM10 - Buy 1 @ 1095.2. If filled, exit @ 1208.3, stop @ 1088.4.
Margin $6,748, risk $680, reward $11,310

The GCM order can't be filled without the YGM order being filled and then stopped out.

I'm tracking all orders and positions in a spreadsheet, which I've attached.

By the way, I just looked at a lot of reviews for IB, and am not impressed. Way too
many negative comments and horror stories about poor customer service, poor executions, heavy slippage, and other issues. I've used Optionsxpress and Lind Waldock for many years, and while there were occasional issues, they were quickly and satisfactorily resolved each time. I would much rather pay a slightly higher commission for good service and execution.

OK if IB don't blow your skirt up, but there are plenty of other reputable brokers that won't charge you an arm and a leg. You are being bent over at $14.

second this... $14 is RIDICULOUS for any normal contract... since you've been trading so long and don't realise this I think you're probably a brokers' ideal client, but never too late....

I remember when I started trading futures back in the '80s. The commissions then were around $50 RT, but that was at a full service broker. Then we got to discount brokers and internet trading, and I think I got down to $20 RT. Today I'm paying $14 in some markets, but $10 in most. You guys seem to be paying $4-5, so guess I'll have to do some more investigation. I've been happy with where I am, but I guess I should ask them to lower the rates.

I'm certainly open to going elsewhere, but not at the expense of execution, customer service, or dispute resolution. Please feel free to suggest other brokers, and I'll check out the reviews online.

SOLD on all three

SOLD on all three

Huh? Sold all 3? Not sure what you mean.

I was filled on JYM10. Gold has not declined to my bid on YGM10.

I'm now long JYM10 from 11067. Exit at 11207, stop at 11017.

Getting close to alert levels on SFM10 and TYM10.

Updated spreadsheet attached.

I would recommend Thinkorswim. Great in all areas, especially customer support and the platform. I pay 6$ round trip and quite happy with that, although with increased volume it would go down, I am about to ask them for a further discount (as standard is 7$ per R/T). No charge for the charts and platform, wicked service, efficient platform, live online help via the platform. Outstanding I say.

There are a few niggles, but none that I find worth mentioning (there was something the other day that someone bought my attention to, but I can´t even remember what it was - LOL - So it wasn´t that bad).

Cheers. Great thread !
