How do traders in 'arcades' make money? Are they just dealing on their own account?

Do 'prop' traders just make money from the bid-offer spread on whatever they make a market in? Do they get a salary aswell?

I'm not familiar with the term "arcades" in trading parlance.

As to you prop traders, however, they generally are not looking to profit off the spread. Those are market makers. Prop traders are more position oriented.
