how are moving averages calculated?

Are moving averages (sma, wma, ema) calculated on the closing price? I ask, because wide range bars seem to have no effect on them as long as the closing price is not "wide ranging".

They can be calculated using any part of the data in a bar.
e.g. In Metastock 7 you can choose from.
Open, High, Low, Close, Median and 'Typical'.
You can invent your own ways of looking in rear-view mirrors too

Hi JO
For us older stock pickers, the closing price was most often used. ( pre Metastock 1)
Most early software used closing price. agpilot

Default for all software is close price, You can use open,high, low but I have tried these imputs in various systems and always found the results to be worse than using the close price.

I think is is due to the fact that the moving averages based on the close are the most widely followed.
