Can anyone help please

I can't defrag because I get a message "chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume(C) please run chkdsk". I've searched for this file and it seems to be one left behind when I tried out (then deleted) pc cleaner. I've tried running it but that hasn't worked. I'd like to delete it but don't know how.

So I thought I'd restore to a date prior to downloading pc cleaner, but every date I try the restore programme just comes up with "can't restore to this date , try another. Why should that be?

If anyone has any ideas it'd save my sanity. Thanks

No quite sure what you mean.
"I've tried running it"
Do you mean PC Cleaner or CHKDSK ?

In case you didn't know, you have to go into DOS to run CHKDSK (i.e. Command Prompt in Accessories).
Don't try to delete it - it's a standard basic operating system command.

Enter CHKDSK C:\ and hit return to check your C drive. Use other letters for other drives.
When it's finished, type EXIT and hit return to get out of the Command Prompt.

Thanks Glenn,

Yes I ran the "standard" chkdsk to no avail

This is the one that's suddenly appeared about the time I tried out pccleaner - CHKDSK.EXE-010ECF80.pf . I can't open it (or delete it 'cept by moving to recycle which doesn't actually get rid of it as far as I understand) and I reckon it's the one causing the problem?

From a techy elsewhere ....

Run chkdsk /f
Command prompt appears and message says at the end "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked next time you start the computer" type Y, click enter.
Now reboot.
A light blue check list screen appears and will work through 3 stages, when it finds a problem it will slow down. Do not touch anything it will automatically continue to boot to Windows. You can now defrag.

bingo!!

Many thanks, Glenn, to you and your anonymous techy.
