Post Office Home phone and Broadband Extra

Not a specific answer to your question but I hope this may help:

There are quite a few deals like this nowadays. It still seems that reliability of your ISP is an important factor. This reviewing site may help ISPreview UK - Independent Internet Service Provider Information Source

I am considering transfer to a Plusnet scheme which is very cheap (£5.99 internet - if you connect to a "cheapo" exchange + £10.95 line rental) & fast enough and they were very good at sorting out a problem on my current contract. (I currently use one of their old schemes which is more expensive - they assure me speeds etc will stay same as I don't need a MAC code to setup a new connection - should I believe them? [rhetorical]). Another point to watch is download allowance - some are quite limited, and contract length.

The problem comparing the ISPs is in the small print (what a surprise!) Eg. My Plusnet account doesn't include free calls to 0870 / 0845 nos but has a load of cheapo overseas calls. I think Post Office does inc 0870s etc. BT have a comparable account to Post Office but their service level is reported as dreadful and is situated off-shore whereas Plusnet is at Sheffield and they do answer the phone / email. Post Office is in Eire apparently.

It's a minefield and a bit like choosing a broker / lawyer / dentist / doctor / partner - if you find a good one stick with them!

Cheap internet normally means crap internet.

As a rule of thumb the more expensive it is the better it is.

Waitrose internet always gets very good reviews from Which!, don't have it myself though.

Agree with that as a generalisation but it's not always the case. It does also seem to depend on the exchange - where BT may have a hand in it. Also, if you want hi-speed and reliability - you're gonna have to pay. Horses for courses. :)
