I have just spent many many hours trying to resolve this by using the web, but just can't find a suitable answer...

Have recently decided to allow a laptop into the house for the sole benefit of children....up until now any use was carefully supervised and was through one of my personal trading laptops.

I have all the usual anti virus software etc, on the new laptop, plus parental controls, however, I have 2 questions please :

1. If a virus did get into the children's laptop, is it possible through the modem to infect my trading laptops ?

2. My son and daughter now has asked to connect their WII and PS3 to online. I cannot find any antivirus software for these consoles on the market. Now, because you can browse the web using these consoles, is it possible again for a virus to infect into my trading laptops from this source ?

Thanks for any help,
Frank.

disable file and printer sharing on your trading laptop, ensure you do not share any files and you will be ok with an anti virus application..

just a note to anyone interested.. the absolute best way to avoid viruses on your system is to have a setup alone the lines of this:

main system linux or mac with virtual machine running windows.. have an external hard drive and cd backups of snapshots of the machine.. with this setup even if you get hit with a virus you can have a fresh machine up and running in 10 minutes... oh and stay away from those porn sites

1. If they are on at the same time and you have them networked together yes. You might also need a firewall in your trading laptop. This one is free Free Firewall Protection Software Best Firewall Computer Security Free Personal Firewall

2. I don't know but I think is impossible up to now for these systems to catch a virus. Even if it were possible see nr. 1 above

You are doing regulary your security updates. Right?

Thank you b4gt for taking the time to respond. I have tried to keep my trading laptops as efficient as possible and so without firewall. I will change now.

This helps a lot.

Regards.

Thanks Forker, cheers.

One question please, my trading laptops use XP, what advice can you provide please. I do use an external hard drive for backups, but, wish to avoid viruses in the first place if possible.

As long as I have a good anti virus and backup would you be comfortable to allow children to use own laptops and PS3/WII online ?

Cheers

Can anyone else please provide an opinion to the original question ?

You should firewall your trading box if there are untrusted machines on your local net. Antivirus as well might be advisable.

forkers solution is the best one.

Frank.......get a good antivirus on your pc/pc's I would recommed Kaspersky, which I use for all my pc's ( currently around 8) update them reguarly or better still put them on automatic update DAILY,
as new variations are in circulation almost every hour (think global !) its a big world out there
if cost is an issue AVG is a free antivirus software, which is pretty damn good,
your question as to can a virus enter via a modem? a modem just converts digital to analog,
(so the infomation can be sent through a telephone line) so sort of yes , BUT the important bit is to have good antivirus installed so it will WARN/TELL YOU when a virus has been detected BEFORE it can do any damage, in many case's you can set it up to delete it immediately its detected,
believe me I'm almost a expert, ( NO not really) due to many bad experences, finally I also have software called AD-Aware which I use to deal with a sort of seconday virus....( sorry can think whats its called!!!) but would recommend that to, sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.......
But if you need any further info please ask,
ps, you should be able to connect the External HHD and flash drives to your pc and run the antivirus though them all

The first part I think alo of people have answered.
For the 2nd. I think you should stop worrying about it - not may virus WRITERs have the knowledge of PS3/XBOX operating system knowledge to write a code to create problems.

Hoep this(y) helps,

Guru

AVG antivirus saved me from a Trojan once by using quarantine.AVG was powerless against the last two trojans I had, they terminated the application everytime I tried to load it and scan. Same with Malware bytes. Antivirus software is not effective enough for me to bother with it anymore.

FYI: this was on a junk-box that I use for mass downloading so that's why I got so many viruses, was to be expected.
