trading while doing my day job

Until recently I used to be able to trade at my desk with my work PC but our IT have tightened up with restriction to sites so I am now unable to do this. I've tried using a
my PDA but unable to get a reasonable internet service.

Has anyone else experienced this problem - what was your solution.
Is there anyway to access restricted sites - sites I currently use are Barclays Stockbrokers, city index and finspreads and Tradindex.

I am still able to access Big Charts and FT.com for charting

Wireless internet and a laptop possibly?

IG Index offer PDA-based trading and charts.

I phone or i belive you can surf the net thorw a server so it blocks the firewalls of your company s o you log in to this server and then carry on trading , a fireman mate said they did it at work , and it worked cant remember the link , something like secure surfing ?? if you do find it PM me as always usefull to know!

If your company has not blocked the websites of companies which offer virtual private networking, then you can use them to access any site. You typically have to pay around $10 US per month (what I paid 18 months ago) and it appears to your company as if you are accessing only their site. Search on the Internet for VPN hosts and then see if you can access their sites. After finding one, check on their reliability by searching on that company name to see if they are legitimate and how long they have been in business. If your company does block some of these, you may have to find one that is fairly new and take a little more risk.

I used one in Dubai since that country blocks a lot of sites that they feel were not in line with their cultural sensitivities. Worked like a charm.

or... just get a nice PDA like the HTC and subscribe to a SB company which offers a mobile platform.

iphone is pretty rubbish so get something more compatible with the real world (like the HTC touch)

Recently got into hot water myself with the IT department ( didn't arf catch some $h!t from the boss over it ).

Think I'm gonna go down the wireless internet and laptop route myself.

( probably end up getting a bollocking coz my charger isn't PAT tested or something like that )

IT restrictions are annoying and can be over the top to the point of being anal. At my place of work, now that we have the MS patch for our IE browsers, we can access any site on the internet, but we're not supposed to do this on works time, just our own: I guess IT may have blocked porn domains I have never tried to access one: but I find all the above completely reasonable.

What I think is unreasonable is that I bet some employers out there have sites that are less secure than the brokerage sites their staff would like to use.

I think it plays both ways really... I wouldn't want to have employees who are glued to charts for the entire working day!

But if its an occasional position check/ trade entry exit... provided it doesn't harm the work, then it should be ok.

If it's just websites you want to visit that are blocked you could try using a webproxy. There are plenty of those around, so there should be one that's not blocked by your IT department.

On the other hand your IT department was probably instructed by management to block trading sites for a reason.

why dont you use a broker where you download there softwate on to your pc, your it dep cant block that! Try CMC!

In fact the can block it. The software will 'talk' on a specific port to the broker platform.
In many enterprise environments the IT department will only allow traffic on a limited set of ports (i.e. the necessary ones such as 80 (http),25(smtp),53(dns),110(pop) and the like).

too much for a challenge. just do the latter. you also might consider to fortify it with a spit. few beers and a joint beforehand could help also.

has anyone mentioned teamviewer, and the power of USB sticks - IT staff can be control freak w*nkers, but as long as your machine has a USB port the power is by definition with you not them because they can only account for and therefore block what is within their system. Even if it hasn't, you can mail yourself programs, or dress them up zip them etc so IT don't get their filthy jobsworth snouts a-sniffing -They only have control over what's within their network but a USB stick can bring something from outside their network , if teamviewer doesn't work, why not set up an application to use your home PC as a server, they'd not know to block that because it's not commercially known as a proxy. If not, Teamviewer can go through most firewalls to remote control a home PC , if not look into proxies that aren't known or blacklisted.

I stream quotes into excel and format them so it looks like work to the untrained eye, then have a macro there to refresh it whenever the boss isn't about,and in future i'll write a macro to place orders so it isn't just watch it's interactively watch, I can presently place orders from the mobile or through teamviewer. The PC at home is programmed to fire up at certain times via use of scheduled tasks/hibernate etc

The whole thing appeals to my sense of rebellion , I love getting one up on IT, I don't need to be paid to enjoy doing that but it is especially sweet when it is making me money at the same time while they sit there sour faced "moderating" this that everything in the company. The slowest way to get rich is making money for a boss, the boss knows this so wants your undivided attention. Trading doesn't harm my day job, but eventually with some luck, trading will replace my day job.

it always amazes me how already hate filed people with problems in abundance come on forums and decide to say something completely and utterly extreme because they're 100 miles away and haven't left their bedroom for 200 days. It worries me greatly that such psychos are at large and not locked up in secure units. How exactly was the wikileaks connection made? I can't stand that guy. Was it some form of voice in his head saying he likes to do a bit of trading at work......THEREFORE...... light goes on in head, eureka moment -- , he must love Julian Assange and his merry band of attention seeking internet stalkers!!!!? wtf!

The whole working world of office workers spend nearly all day on facebook and such from what I can make out, so I say trade away at work 'till your heart's content!
Im personally amazed at how much money some companies waste on staff that are clearly not needed. Loads and loads of my friends spend at at least half of their day messing around on the internet/facebook etc. I honestly find it quite shocking.

Correct! lol - all the girls in my office where I worked spent at LEAST half of the day shopping online, and all the guys just chat on facebook and the like.
Not me though....I traded online whilst at work. Got caught once ot twice too
