Mobile Internet - Any Good?

In my view it is not good enough yet as I have heard that there are a lot of reliability issues with connection and based on this not consistent enough for trading.

I've considered this - especially as there were some good promotions from 3 & vodafone.

As 333 says - the main problem is reliability. From reports I've heard, this is very much affected by signal reception quality. The coverage maps issued by the network providers are "guide" only - so if it doesn't cover you properly in practice, you need to make a swift cancellation. The most i would consider it for at moment is EOD trading, which in a decent signal area should be ok.

I was considering dumping BT altogether but didn't go with it because the cost saving was neutral. In a few years if/when network coverage improves (you can't get the fast speed in all areas) I'll reconsider. It's very useful if you are a tenant or mobile because there's no commitment to charges etc every time you move.

£15 / month with 3gb download on "3" isn't unreasonable unless you have big download needs. Worth checking ispreview.com for latest updates.

On a separate note I have found Vodafone customer service really poor - so i wouldn't have taken their contract. My experience was that they are good at mouth-music but really have to be leaned on to get your entitlement. (Basically when i had a PAYGO mobile phone whose screen failed after 3 months they told me to get lost. After threatening them with Trading standards and about a dozen emails offering me increasingly generous settlement they caved in and gave a full refund)

I am thinking of getting "3" 3gb download £15/month, but am not very sure if this would be adequate for the purpose of connecting to CS website and use of their interactive streaming charts, I inquired with their technical department as to what the utilisation would be if constantly for a day to their website and charts so I could then work it out - they could not give me an answer as they did not have a clue! any ideas folks?

Presumably it would be the same as your current useage on landline? (assuming you have one). I've used CS's demo website and it didn't seem to make much difference to my normal web useage. With 1 x PC on 16/24 and another 3/24 my useage usually around IGB. But I don't download many large files or video etc.

Keep us posted if you try "3".

Ive used one of these devices for about 12 months now...when i'm on my travels...reliability is as good as any mobile phone would be...everything depends on strength of signal etc....there have been times where i've been connected for 18 hrs, charts, platform, messenger the works...no problems...brokers number in my phone just in case....as for usage...the figures they quote are guides.....they won't automatically cut you off if for some reason usage was over the guide limit.

Not bad devices..... as with everything there will be improvements continually.

Many Thanks for your feedback folks, I have today placed an online order with "3". Expecting delivery on Tuesday 15/4, hopefully now I should not miss out on trading opportunities that I normally missed out whilst on the move. I only trade FTSE, DAX and DOW intraday, I do not touch anything else. I am doing quite well, I never go looking for a Trade, do so only when an opportunity presents itself.
regards

I have the "3" service for my Laptop when I take it out, and its ok... I wont say anymore than that really...

I have had the Vodafone unlimited service for just over a year now.
I didn't go for the Cheaper "3" service as the coverage wasn't as good, certainly not where I want to use it.
I leave it connected to IB TWS all day while at "work" and it very rarely has any connection issues, it is not quite as good as Land line from a reliability point of view, but not far off. I get just over 100kbps download speed if I download approx 20 meg file.
To be fair I don't use it in many different places, so can't speak for other parts of the network, maybe some parts are better than others.
I wouldn't want to use it as a replacement for a land line Broadband connection partly because of the limited download allowance ( now 5gb ) but it is very usefull as a back-up/extra connection.
I got mine from Business wireless Solutions UK - Voice and Mobile Data Solutions as they offered the dongle for free.

Works reasonably.

I also recommend www.operamini.com for mobile phones - half the posts I make on t2w are made from my phone at a guess.

arabiannights: just downloaded on to my mobile.......that is really good.i am with 3.the mobile intermet is crap and very slow.many thanks
however .i am still working out how to use the zoom function properly.perhaps you could let us know the tricks..thanks once again

Hi again trading folks, I should have posted an update earlier - yes I ordered the "3" mobile wireless internet as stated in my earlier post, their customer service in India was appaling to say the least gave me the impression that they are working on a commission basis as they signed me up for two contracts instead of one:confused:, trying to resolve this became a nightmare, got fedup of them and immediately returned both packages.
Idid however plug the (dongle)connection on my laptop and found it to be slow and definately not suitable for intraday trading purposes execution of trades was very slow felt like I was on a dial up connection, combined with all this and poor customer service I would not touch them with a 10ft barge pole(n)
