pipex evening slowdown

Hi

I'm using esignal on 1 pc, and a connection to my broker on a 2nd pc, with pipex as the ISP.

This works fine during the day, but after about 5 or 6pm the quotes just dry up and the service slows to an unusable pace, to the point that the esignal datamanager tells me I have no password.

Esignal support suggested that pipex might be capping my service. Pipex claim not, but that evening traffic is greater so contention becomes a greater factor. They also suggested that would be the case with any ADSL provider running over BT's network.

It sounds like I need to change ISPs, but before I do that, any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Phil

contention is always a possible bottleneck for streaming data. a 50:1 contention ratio, which is fairly common for retail broadband, means the available bandwidth is also shared with 50 other subscribers.

This means if you with your trading connection are also sharing the line with 49 kids downloading music/films/porn via P2P then you're likely to have problems.

suggest checking out a business ADSL/SDSL provider, or seeing if cable is available in your area as an alternative.

A similar thing happened to me with another isp after they started traffic shaping. I got my MAC code and migrated (to Zen). I have had no problems since.

which business broadband?

I've been looking into business broadband providers and the obvious ones with good reviews on various sites seem to be BT and Zen; are there any others worth considering? Any recommendations?

Thanks again
Phil
