improve mpg quality-video

my cousin has sent me some files ending with .mpg they are all video files but i don't know if they are mpg1 or mpg2. The quality of the videos are poor, is there any software i can use to enhance the quality of the videos.

the file spec:

video codec-MPEG Video Decoder
audio codec-MPEG Audio Decoder

don;t know the bit rate.

if the video qualty appears similar to that which you generally see on internet clips, then they are probably mpeg1 also known as VCD quality. If they had been done in mpeg2 they would /or should be up to DVD quality, so as youv'e described them, they are obviously mpeg1. Unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to improve their quality,ask the person to re-encode them in mpeg2 or better still have them encoded in DIVX, that way you get DVD quality while the file size remains about the same as mpeg1. That's science for you
