hi, one of my pc's has been grinding to a halt recently. last week it was fine, but recently browsers are extremely slow - chrome, ie, & flock (old netscape).

when i look at the windows task manager, under the processes tab, the pf usage is extremely high, around 700. cpu usage is minimal.

what could be the problem? i havent installed any new software or made any changes. ive ran cc cleaner over the registry. no joy.

i hoped one of you technically minded wizards may have an idea.....

you rinsed it watching porn.

That has been the cause of death for all of my computers.

Then save it as "scan.bat" then open it, that should make it run faster.

Hi - I was having the same problem as OP so I tried this and then the screen went completely blue. How long does this scan take?

Call me a cynic, but something inside tells me that you just ****** your PC good and proper.

Although I felt very strongly compelled to give it a try, just to see if the OS would protect itself, or actually commit seppuku. Anyway, I managed to resist

100% certain. It'll prompt you to ask if you want to do it, as phil the retard hasn't set any switches. Even if he had, I'm pretty sure windows file protection would stop you.

This ain't no rm -rf ;)

Anyway, I really should be remote logging onto reuters to see what fed do, even though I won't be trading it... toodles...
 
Right, that's all great, but anyone got any advice to stop a PC overheating?

Is it overheating? temp? Is there a change - what are the symptoms? PC or laptop?

If it's a new phenomenon - ascertain the cause eg blocked fan, box in front of radiator, hardware failure.

If it's a component - replace if you can identify. Sometimes it's not obvious and even expert techies sometimes just systematically replace items until they find the culprit.

A common cure for PC boxes is to get the Hoover on it - undo the case panel and suck out the last 5 years worth of dog hair/dust/loose change.

Thanks 0007 - I suspect its a hardware (prob motherboard - LGA775 socket, I think) problem, as the box is clear of dust, radiators, etc. There are about 6 fans inside, none blocked, and software and manual temperature readings look reasonable. It normally takes about a week, then the display freezes, so it is usable, but a bit annoying. I have tried different video cards, and used the ASUS app to set different CPU/fan speeds. The warranty has expired so return is no longer an option.

It is a fairly high spec machine and I had intended to auto-trade and scrape tick data from it, but it's just not robust enough. For 24/7 reliability I have had a couple of secondhand HP boxes running XP - these will run continuously for months.

I prob need to look at a dedicated techie forum, but thanks for your suggestions.

Similar problems can be caused by intermittent failure of memory or CPU or MOBO and often the quickest way is by substitution (if you've got some spare kit).

Have you tried swearing at it?

I'm not a computer nerd so I don't know if it's any good for what you need.

Try the OPTIMIZE scan up at the top right of the screen, I'm sure it'll find something wrong and then come back with the inevitable sales pitch but it may give a clue.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

And yes, tried swearing, no effect on PC hardware, but caused spikes in personal CPU usage.
