I disagree. This site has turned into a trading nursery for newbies who are clearly too lazy to do any real research and I am getting annoyed at seeing posts deleted for pointing this out. This type of moderation only encourages more newbies to ask more inane questions and discourages any serious discussions from taking place. Is it any wonder that the more serious traders have resorted to private forums or have left altogether? Trading isn’t all about systems and indicators you know :-0

I find the site fairly boring an uninteresting now.

Oh dear, damned if we do, damned if we don't :)

The new thread ignore function is extremely effective n_t, I suggest its use. sorry to hear your finding things uninteresting, perhaps if I may be so bold as to suggest you start a thread on what you think may start some interesting debate and see what comes back, the difficulty here is most subjects have been done to death and thinking of something original to post on is difficult (for me at least )

We all have to start somewhere. :)

I have been involved in what I thought were interesting debates but they all end up being "cleaned up" by a/the moderators.

You are right, most subjects have been discussed but nobody (newbies) bother looking for them. I suppose that is my point...sort of...

The not finding things easily is something we can work on, help in that debate please, your and others input here would be appreciated.

Sorry if you feel that some threads are being overly moderated, we will be responding to reported posts by the membership and/or applying the site guidelines.

I have to say that I find it difficult to scroll some of the threads for what I am looking. Even some of the recent ones take on tome proportions. Looking at nine's psychology thread, which is one of the recent ones and pretty deep in substance, it is difficult not to cut to a simple question. Someone will come up with the answer, or link.

There is so little time....

But you are right, New Trader, there are some posts started that are quite exasperating when one answered a similar one a few weeks previously.

So, how do you achieve the smartening up? I have been following stevespray's posts after noting a few points of real observation and found a thread where a number of members with gold stars attacked what he was saying. IM (not so) HO they were pursuing the common wisdom and he was showing real insight.

So I was disappointed that they essentially shut his train of thought down.

The concept they attacked was potentially dangerous to a newbie but excellent for someone who has their trading under control. So experienced members shut down the discussion about something that was to them heretical. Damn!

So was I, but that did not stop me from being critical. It was a pity that it ended as it did, though.

The trouble is that posters of steves calibre and others of course, have better things to do with their time than argue with others about their post ...like actually trading! and will just move on to more interesting thoughts and tasks

As a mod do you jump in and try and save the poster and curtail discussion which may prove interesting further down the road, personally I try to let them run unless they get nasty with each other, often mod intervention can be a thread killer also.

welcome to the world of moderating nine, and all the dilemas, as I said earlier we are damned whatever path we take, ah well

That's why we have to shut down the bullying and unreasonable arguments. The really important stuff isn't shut down by newbies ...

Its also true that experienced traders (or experienced message board participants) get bored with seeing the same old stupid question. And foolish answers. But I think the answer there is the ignore button because you can't tell by the stars who is going to provide you that little bit of knowledge you didn't have and can make a real difference.

The extent to which we get the "only my idea is good" isn't surprising because trading is like religion - it is important to us and we have found the path. Have you ever noticed how fanatically religious people avoid unbelievers and (almost :)) irrationally defend their beliefs? They do it because they don't want someone showing them a chink in their path. They fear the impact of cognitive dissonance.

Well, we need to be better than them ... and even if we ignore people with different views we shouldn't try to shut them down all the time. Or we will never learn.

It seems that a lot of the shutting down is couched (internally, mentally) in the I'm defending newbies from these nasty people/ideas/losers. So experienced users attack outsiders with ideas that we don't believe in. To help the newbies. But it doesn't help; it just creates a boredom relieving argument. So mods primarily need to help create an environment where ideas can get out not squashed by the strongest voice/fastest typist (gun).

Sermon over. Hallowed are the Ori.

Perhaps there would be fewer stupid questions and fewer newbie-initiated threads if the Most Recommended Threads and Most Recommended Posts for the day and week were displayed on the front page or forum page. I've suggested this several times, as has at least one of the advisors, but it has so far been shrugged off (which is one reason why I continue to decline the invitation to become an advisor). What, after all, can the admins expect when there are over 26,000 threads? If I were new to the site, I wouldn't bother to work through all that either.

And as to the multiple threads initiated by newbies and vendors, I see no reason why the same time limitation applied to posts (you can't make more than one post a minute or whatever) can't be applied to threads, i.e., you can't open more than one new thread per day.

As to what the moderators moderate, I tend to agree with rols, but I no longer care enough about it to argue the point.

It'll never be easy, because this forum potentially tries to meet the needs of both expert and beginner. And that's why the Mods have an important role to play. Anyone can criticise (& this isn't a comment on any previous post) but it ain't so easy when you try to do it yourself. (I must be going soft - I'll be extending that to the politicians next!)

Yes, it can be boring. Researchers have to sift through a lot of often irrelevant info to find the interesting bits and on the way all sorts of unexpected bonuses occur because an idea or topic was triggered. I've sometimes read a whole book or thread and got just one, but a valuable one, idea. You have to kiss an awful lot of frogs before you find the prince.

True. Once your mind is closed to other ideas you're dead. Once upon a time wise men thought the earth was flat.

It's so easy to forget what it was like when one started. I cringe now at what I didn't know (and didn't know that I didn't know). We all had to start somewhere and I've been very grateful to the many book authors and forum posters who've enabled me to improve. The least anyone can do is to offer a patient helping hand to those willing to accept. The experts by all means should provide an alternative viewpoint if they feel justified, but in a constructive way to help the tyros.

I agree with the philosophy of this VB forum:

Forum should come LAST!
Xtreme Visual Basic Talk - View Single Post - How to participate here effectively

There really is enough information available FREE on the web to allow newbies to make an informed decision about things like which is the "best" Spread-betting company. I think an FAQ forum should be added at the top of the General Forums section and newbies should be encouraged to read through them before posting a question. The FAQ forum can contain links to threads of the most commonly discussed issues.

Thanks for the rec, Trader333. Unfortunately, nearly everyone else is obsessed with these idiotic dots.
