Why would anyone set up such a thing ?
Is there a deliberate conspiracy to spread disinformation ?
Why do the people who start them believe they are useful ?

Lighten-up mate:) The Chicago pits where set up for trading...and not everyone walked away happy.

I think you are just still sore from getting forum banned. You have to let it go (see it as a bad trade, you know?), or set up your own forum so that you can take out the 'injustice' you felt on someone else.

My own solution to that problem is do a bit of banning myself. Say a forum bans me. I'd ban them back by never going back even when they beg me to. I find it modifies the mods' behaviour.

The only reasons that I can think of for setting up a forum would be

a) to make money, but I make more doing other stuff, so why would I ?
b) spreading disinformation to protect my edge by muddying pools etc, but there's already enough people doing just that, so the impact would be minimal
c) lulz ?
d) to annoy t2w :p
e) ?

I can understand this helping people thing, but generally, people are quite selective about who they want to help, and you cant do that via a forum can you.

Is there anything to be gained from getting an understanding about how the average retail loser thinks and acts..

I think some start out as well meaning (Big Mike's for eg) with an altruistic intent, some are purely business models T2W being a good eg, and others evolve into such. I don't believe there is a deliberate conspiracy to spread disinformation, however there is no doubt that they inadvertantly serve that purpose but also serve other purposes like spreading decent information, and helping to bridge gap for many that work alone. Unfortunately they provide fertile territory for vendors whether declared or undeclared and can be a breeding ground for discontent. The interesting one for me is forexfactory who get literally ooo's of hits per day from 000's of members and guesst logged on and the subject matters on the topic of forex are massive, and there is actual trading discussed there as oppossed to here where it is rare. The way the site is configured seems to encourage this. Yeh they have their fair share of fall outs between members etc but they have a commercial section for vendors and a two step process in there for that (and although a little flawed) there is at least an attempt to protect the ignorant. Most interstingly of all is that they haven't become a laughing stock and known for Lulz over the years like T2W, and being I would say at least 50 times busier on an actual user basis than T2W is this is either quite an achievement due to some of the stuff I have mentioned above re site set-up and management ( I won't mention any other thoughts as the management here get paid for such stuff - and I don't, and don't care enough) and/ or a.n other resons (s.) On the day a new 'Ceo' takes over here from the founder (who in my opinion definately took his eye off the ball in recent years re this site - probably in favour of others in his portfolio) it's a timely thread.

As you are not in the business, you will never know. I am sure the advertising revenue at t2w is sufficiently handsome for the mods to dispense with 'trading' and the associated risks. Then there's the jackpot of someone coming along to pay a couple of millions for the site and it's member email addresses.

If I were in your shoes, I'd give up that random entry system (with a MA cross over theme) of yours and start a sure bet money maker of running a forum. Have you ever wondered why CV could make 500% in a couple of weeks, yet he preferred modding a forum instead ?

With the rapid pop-up of FX brokers who advertise 'easy money' there has been an influx of average joes who are taking an interest in the market. I guess if you're business minded you might take advantage of this and offer these people, as well as seasoned traders a place to talk and shar ideas.

Is there a deliberate conspiracy to spread disinformation ?

We all know that trading is a competitive endevour. At the end of the day we all do this for our own benefits, you wouldn't feel sorry for someone and give some of your profits away to make their loss a little less hard. Also, the more people playing the game with a bad strategy, the better your share of profits using your sound strategy.

Then you have marketeers for these new 'brokers' who want to entice people to trade - I won't go off on one but we all know the story (slippage etc) so they want people to deposit money and offer them 'strategies' and online 'tutorials' to make them feel they have a good chance to make money.

Why do the people who start them believe they are useful ?

Because despite the disinformation they can be very useful for those with the awareness to separate the wheat from the chaff. I have met a few great people on T2W who have been of genuine help and have taught me a lot along the way and to whom I owe a lot of gratitude.

the pursuit of the fortune. Everyone wants to be someone. The market offers such chance to everybody. So people gather to find the rule or chance to catch the money.

As bbmac points out, this is a timely thread and I have read the comments so far with interest so I thought I would add a few views of my own.

I think the observations about money are fair and for most people this is their motive for doing anything, especially in the area we all work in. But even then I don't think its all about the money. Some people I have met over the years have set things up (forums included) without the faintest idea as to why or even what they expect from it. There are plenty of examples of this inside and outside of trading.

Where money is the goal then (as has already been pointed out) I suppose there is the hope that someone will come along one day with a ton of money to pay for your community, look no further than Martin Lewis for evidence of this one. But I am guessing these are very few and far between.

As for a deliberate conspiracy to spread poor or misleading information, it would no doubt be possible but I doubt that many of the players involved would have the time, money or inclination to set up a forum for this purpose. They are far more likely to use an existing one and we have all seen evidence of this. There can be no denying that misleading information is given but then most trading forums are public so it is inevitable. If there is evidence of this being done intentionally for commercial gain then it is up to the members to report it and the community management to deal with it. That's a whole new discussion of course, and one we will no doubt be returning to!

"Then there's the jackpot of someone coming along to pay a couple of millions for the site and it's member email addresses."

Can't see email addresses being worth much in this day and age, far cheaper to just pay someone to hack the site than buy it for it's member database.

That's what most sensible people would do.

Of course rather than paying 2 million, there is the option of paying their advertising agency a couple of thousand bucks and they'll email out pretty much anything you want them to :p

Joe what is this nonsense about ?

Very occasionally I might post a nugget or 2. It's not my problem if you can't recognize them...capish !

Iv'e helped quite a few members for free over the yrs.
Here's a clue...they don't find me, I find them.

Oh and don't worry, you will never be found.

Hi The hare,

You got wonderful replies from the very Intelligent members but simply I can say that trading is just directly related to the money so everyone want to earn money so some people started the forums so that the can provide service to get money and users use them for the same cause.

Who is Martin Lewis and what did he do? Did he sell a forum for megabucks??

Didn't ForexFactory get sold a couple of years ago? How much did it go for?
