So is there a SB firm out there that offers reasonable spreads (say 2-3 pips), allows linked s/l to be placed at the same time as the main order, will guarentee that you will never owe them money in a disaster scenario where your PC crashes or you hold across a w/e and a gap opens or whitehouse in nuked, that offers instant prices - closely coupled to the underlying market and that is happy for you to make money consistently?

And if not...are there any other vehicles that can be used and what are the tax implications?

Reasonable spreads on what? 3 pip Spreads may be bad for the FTSE, but good on some exotic FX pairs for example.

If you place a guaranteed stop loss (for a small charge) then you don't have to worry about some of the things you mentioned.

try capital spreads - only 1 pip for ftse - they offer guaranteed stops by default and if you sign up through financial-spread-betting.com you even get a free credit if i'm not mistaken. note however that this is assuming you are interested in spread betting the indices, some other spread betting providers may be better suited for trading stocks.

And if not...are there any other vehicles that can be used and what are the tax implications?

Have you tried fixed odds betting with betonmarkets - the odds / stake are always fixed.

Guaranteed stops by default? Not sure if you are saying that they are free, but they are not, you face a higher spread if you want to guarantee the stops. Imagine a 1 pip spread with guaranteed stop, it couldnt happen!!(y)
