IG always seems to offer the biggest range of shares, but anyone know which SBs have the best overall deal now on spread, rollover financing, etc, if you anticipate holding for a few days to a few months? Forgetting about shorting, when does it make more sense just to buy the shares instead?

CMC allow you (a) to determine your level of finance from 0%-max (ie 99% indices, <=95% shares etc.) and have very small spreads. Downside is their non-UK shares list is limited, compared to IG and their platform isn't as nice (looks like a video game!). Their iPad and IPhone apps are much better than their website platform.

Only makes sense to buy the actual shares if you want rights. SB spreads tend to be the same as stockbrokers anyway. For shares, I use Barclays Stockbrokers (not Barclays Spread Trading), their software is fantastic.

Sometimes it's psychological. If you are trend trading or buy-and-hold trading, you really DON'T want to see your positions every day. Temptation to sell early is very strong.

Really? I don't know what CMC is like but if you trade something like AZN the SB spread is typically 6 to 8 whereas I get 1 or less with CFD or DMA. SB spreads on the high liquidity lower priced equities aren't so bad though.

Depends on the size you trade really - small size and SB usually a better bet because of CFD minimum commission, large size and the SB spread is a killer. Need to do your sums carefully.
