How to check on peoples trading background

All history should be there. including that from when it was SFA. Of course only relates to those dealing with customer money. Will not cover those trading proprietary funds for corporates. Also will only show who holds regulation and if this is umbrella setup will not show name of regulated entity.

Looking at the histories of a few mates, it only goes back to about 2000

I'm sooo vain. I had to go and look for myself- only goes back to 2001. Still good to know I changed from being a CF26 ( Customer trading) to being a CF21 ( Investment Adviser) first I knew about that!! Also good to see that I vannished from their system in January 2003...
