Hi Everyone

I just wanted to ask this question as i am having trouble here. When i am all alone & trading i can do everything right & hardly made a mistake. When my wife is at home then the kids are hanging about i cant seem to do a thing right i make loads of mistakes & lose money!!

So do you all have your own rooms or can you cope with it?

I am not surprised. You need quiet to concentrate and analyse plus your subconscious will kick in if you're making a mistake rather than spend its energy monitoring what your children are doing.

You absolutely should have some quiet time to trade. Even if you have your own room you just can't stay focused if the youngsters are home. They knock on the door or jump around the house as kids do. It's also much easier if your wife supports your trading activity and understands your need for some peace and quiet.

Plug in your headphones and listen to your squawk.
Or Bloomberg or CNBC if you don’t have a squawk subscription.

My recent bad experience of getting cocky and thinking I could scalp sports markets had me lose about 15% of my account in a second as I was on the phone to a friend at the time so not paying attention to what was going on.

seperate room essential doesn't have to be trading room laptop in bedroom or loft is fine

Noise cancelling headphones a decent pair

Then ACDC,Van Halen, ELO and Shadows for slow parts of the day, Scorpions Rock you like a huricane, Bon Jovi stick to your guns and DCs back in black when your killin it.

I have my own room with the door shut and bolted! If you've just started trading then kids or no kids, it's going to be up and down for a while and having your own room might not make the difference you would like it to, but it will help.

Imagine trading from this hell hole with phones ringing, shouting, screaming, crying and Kweku getting escorted off the premises by the filth all in a days work. If I had to work there I'd go Patrick Bateman on those muvas within the first hour.:devilish:

I used to have a room, but felt isolated form the wife n kids. So i moved the two monitors and PC downstairs in the foyer area and leave the charts running 24/7. Because i trade from 7pm onwards, kids are usually in bed soon after and relaxed feeling. Also helps to keep and eye on charts when moving around downstairs daytime.

I don't feel the room or no room helped at all. Trading is all in your head. If your easily distracted then don't trade, jump that hurdle than begin.

I love trading with old school Metallica in the headphones and some days those anoying TV shows the mrs watches is there in the background. Makes no difference at all man.

I don't have a room to trade in but would love one, on top of the TV on the missus chatting away to me, college runs, phone calls what are normally for the kids, dad can you take me somewhere. Drives me mad for peace and quite with no distractions would be heaven. I stopped trading a couple of years ago because of home life frictions not working with trading. I used to tell the missus if went out to work you wouldn't be asking me to take kids here and there and anything else you want me to do. Could never get the family to understand I was at work when the market was on. If I had my own room I would put six bolts on it not come out until I was finished trading.

This is a issue, in sorts..

Here is my set-up..

Laptop in bedroom, on L-type office desk. Takes up alot of the bedroom.

HP Laptop, has seen its last days, the screen flickers now, and I have to push it forward and back, to get it to stop flickering. But, Im out of room, because I cant open it any further. So, every 30-60 seconds, it flickers, i have to half close it, then open it again, and push on it or goof with it till it stops flickering, and its very very very annoying.

I have 1 screen, but have 5 things i need to see at all times. So i have to do alot of clickin, opening windows, and this and that. Then, I dont see something because the page is buried, yada yada yada..

So, today, Im trading My 20" Custom Rims for a 40 inch LCD tV, then I can have everything right there, in front of me, thru HDMI..

I have a 51 inch Plasma right next to my desk, but Im afraid of burn-ins, so I wont use that.

My family doesnt bother me, they know what Im doing. They understand, I work at home. But my APT is like very very small, and noise travels loud and fast around here..

Im pretty much home alone all day, cause my wife works, and my boys are at school, but I have a puppy, and must tend to him alot.

Then, Friday, I printed up and got laminated Candle patterns, (14) so I can put them on my wall to visually see them at all times. So, now, thats 30 differant things I have that are on my wall.

I need a Room, Just for my Biz.

So, seeing this is my final career, Im in the process of making some money, and renting out or buying a small office space, that I can go to every day and work.

Bottom line is, I would be a better trader, by having my very own Office space, with everything visible. But could also use it as a training center for a few family memebers or friends, but still, have a Work, Office feeeling. But just by setting the tone in the morning, shower, coffee, family time, the go to MY WORKING OFFICE, turn on the Lights, the TV's, make coffee, water the plants, Open the curtains..

All in the matter of time. I told my wife, When I make it, Im going to get a 40 story glass building built, with 1 penthouse office, MINE, and thats it.. Maybe even live there, with the whole roof with grass and a pool, like a backyard..

Cant wait..

Having worked for both UBS and Deutsche ( Europes largest trading floor) I can assure you, the trading floors are not hell holes. I tried working from home for 4 years and it's the most miserable, soul destroying experience. Trading needs a buzz. not kids, but people. Even if people are trading a different product, it is not a solitary occupation. There's a reason that trading floors are large communal places- it works!

Would you believe this? I am trading from the living room where the TV is located.Previously I did my trading from a small room but I found the situation too isolated.

Now I trade while watching the TV at times. And yes, need to be around the family as well. Trading is a lonely work but that doesn't mean one has to do it in an enclosed and isolated quiet place.

I did what you are doing for a long time.

My 'room' is really open plan, I had it built upstairs in the house.

It makes a huge difference to have a bit of peace & quiet. I listen to a news feed whilst I trade and have some hefty headphones that cancel out an additional noise, such as the kids screaming the place down.

You need to focus and if you aren't focused, you'll make dumb mistakes.

I tend to use the arrowed room ..............but if the maid is cleaning I will rough it elsewhere ;)

The beauty of living alone:cool: I'm 23 mind, I guess that will change in the future, not for a damn good while yet though.

I have a dedicated room for trading kitted out with everything a trading room needs, incl a mini fridge/ refreshment tray so I don't need to make trips downstairs when I'm hungry or fancy a drink.

You need to banish the wife and kids from your trading area. I get annoyed when the postman knocks on the door.
