We've heard about websites like Twitter and Facebook becoming all the rage recently, in fact a lot of FX/Spread Betting/Share Trading providers have started building a presence in this area. The question is though, do you use sites like Twitter etc? Would you use them to find out more information about a broker?

I've heard stories about hackers, viruses, etc getting into hard drives. All this security stuff makes me stay away, although I am curious, especially as it seems that all the well known personalities use it. I get the feeling that it is one good way to waste more time.

Be interesting to know how others feel.

It can certainly be a 'time suck' for sure. But in my personal experience using Twitter, it's as safe as any other area of the internet, just don't click on dodgy links etc. If you wanna search for topics on twitter a good link to use is http://search.twitter.com/.

Anyone else had an experience with Twitter etc?

Hello,

Don't use facebook or twitter or even youtube as they are all banned by the government where I am. I think they are going to make having fun illegal soon.

The Chinese state employs many people to police the internet. Yet many young people keep finding ways to elude them. Nontheless, it is a risky business going on line in China if you have the intent to criticise the govt. or seek access to sites/organisations considered hostile by the online police. Bit like Orwells "1984" I suppose?

Some sites discussing Chinese internet censorship:

Bring back books and joined up writing

Spot on
But joined up thinking needed first.
Never twittered.
Sounds a bit of a girlie bimbo WAG thing. I hear you are limited to 140 characters, but I'd have thought that was beyond WAG bimbo limits.
Anyway, what's wrong with John Terry scoring all the time? I thought that was what footballers were supposed to do?:cheesy:

I use Facebook and I find it an easy and cheap way to communicate or advertise to loads of people. I wish I came up with the idea ;-(

i joined up to twitter. I thought anything useful to an Iranian rebel in a riot against the revolutionary guards might be good for me too. It turned out to be totally pointless. I never used it anymore. Maybe next time I'm in a riot in Tehran it 'll be good to have.
Facebook - never.
Although I did hear a rumour that if you have a facebook account the state won't bother to install cameras in your living room. Yet.
Cos they know what you are doing already!

You can't beat a book, can you? :)

I'm glad you guys convinced me. I was getting curious about Twitter.

Well a book is a book after all, a continuous narrative. Completely different to Twitter. I think it's like the internet in general or even online forums, there's a lot of crap out there, but there's a lot of good stuff too.

The only thing I've heard in regards to viruses/hackers is some celebrities have had their account PWs cracked and the hacker posts bogus "tweets." Don't click on links you dont trust. Just use common sense as there are some spammers out there, but nothing out of the ordinary that you wouldn't come across in any other part of the internet.

It can be useful depending on who or what you follow, for example your favorite companies, musicians, or club. None of my friends who have it actively post tweets (who needs it with facebook?).

Twitter's value is the ability to follow. I have only used it to follow people I am interested in hearing from, which is a short list that I have made even shorter. I have used it to follow certain traders and investors, and that has been quite interesting, to see how other people trade. You can only know what they tell you, but I do find some value to this, although I am not quite sure how to use it.

You can have updates sent to your mobile if you choose, but this can get quite annoying. I prefer to check twitter.com except for the few I know who only rarely send out tweets.

I've used it for SEO quite successfully but apart from that most of what is on there is utter bilge tbh

How have you used this for SEO? Linking a website and including a sentence in there with keywords? I am very interested, thank you.

Google indexes tweets and accounts. To get a certain phrase to 1 in Google via twitter took me about 4 weeks. The more follwers you have the more times that mesage is put out there.

Wow. 4 weeks? The potential for this is HUGE! How many followers did you have at the time?

Maybe...it's not as amazing as it sounds, especially as more people get wind of it - the phrase was reasonably unique but had already been posted on various message boards and as comments to things etc. And I'm not saying what the phrase was becuase it was to do with winding someone up on another VERY anarchic board that I frequent.

You know how Google indexes yes? The more links you have to your site the higher up the rank you go and the better quality of the link the more it is weighted. Well, lots of people use Twitter, it's highly ranked on Google. So in the experimental case I had about 100 followers. The account name was the phrase and I kept tweeting the phrase also.

Similarly I have a small business. With the help of Google maps I got it onto page 1 in around 4 weeks. I have around 150 followers and periodically tweet the website address - that's 150 quality links regularly being indexed to your website. The site itself is still down on page 2 or so but with the help of Twitter and all the usual business directory rubbish I was able to get the google maps listing up to number four and therefore visible on Google page one in 4 weeks.
