What's the average bid/ask spread cost?

What the average (in $) bid/ask cost for stocks? mutual funds?

If I had shares purchased and the cost would I be able to calculate this?

The bid/ask spread varies widely between securities. It depends a great deal on how actively they are traded - more meaning tighter spreads. Also, spreads will vary even within the course of a trading day based on things like news events, data, etc. You'd need to watch a price feed which shows the indicative prices (bids and offers) to get a feel for it.
