Found this article searching through Google news; the Daily Mail is not my 'cup of tea', honest guv :p I reckon he got banned for pi55ing in the hall way and is now engaged in a v. clever (free!) slick pr campaign...

Having said that we know it's all about the probabilities, whatever the 'system'..

I love the cynical comments at the footer of the article, you may recoginse the tone, it's similar to what we all say re. systems sellers: :D

Although roulette is a negative expectancy game, I thought it was widely accepted that there are methods (for example measuring relative velocity of wheel and ball) that can give an edge. People are forever being caught fiddling with lasers and computers etc

A mate of mine in the industry claims that the more experienced croupiers are capable of influencing the final location of the ball to within a particular quadrant of the wheel, and are therefore able to assess the bets placed, and maximise the house advantage (on which they recieve bonus's), its possible if this was the case, then its an exploitable edge

You hear stories about it but all the people I talked to say it's crap. All's I know is the casino operates on the basis in a year, the casino will win apporx 3% of whatever is on the table on any given spin.
 
Since when was 28k a fortune?! I thought that was just about enough to buy a VW Golf these days

Because all the casinos now have links to each other using face recognition software so that when one person gets banned from any casino they get a worldwide ban at the same time.

I also remember there was a documentary around 3 years ago where a group of (I think it was Russians) had been able to detect any bias on a roulette wheel using electronic wizardry and taken a London house for around 1 million. Of course as soon as they were discovered the game was over for any Casino.

If my local casino is anything to go by, the best system for consistent winning sessions at roulette is:

1. Own a takeaway or drive a taxi for a living
2. That's it.
 
Did anyone see the Derren Brown "supposed" attempt to predict the number that the roulette ball would land on ?

Yes, he was one number out. quite impressive if it was real (I think it probibly was, he's banned from most casino's)
 
It wasn't real. The pins in the wheel are used to randomise the drop. It's all well and good trying to watch the phsics (yeah right) but as soon as the ball hits the pin it's anyone's guess.

I can't believe anyone takes that fraud seriously.

if you watched the preamble to the "event", he said he tapped one of his feet when the ball passed a point on the wheel, and tapped his other foot when the wheel completed a full turn.
This supposedly was for him to calculate speed, and thus energy, and thus where the ball would land.

With all this foot tapping expertise, and the fact he got it wrong, he could always get a job in Riverdance.

It was a jolly jape.
What I found more disturbing is that some people may be susceptible to instant hypnotic induction. (the guy who got skimmed for 5K)
 
There were a few things that did not add up for me:

1) I don't know many people who can draw £5K out of their account with no notice to the bank as very few have that level of cash in a current account.

2) He kept emphasising the fact that they couldn't say where they were. To me that is because he was not at any Casino (because that could be checked and verified later). He was probably in a studio set up in London.

3) There is no way they would risk £5K and more importantly no way that they would pay out £180K if the correct number came up. It was always going to be one number away as that adds credibility to the stunt.

Clever but not real.
