Teh future of teh future

Hello again
I'm looking at Corn on the CME and i can see that volume for the December contract is higher than for the current July contract (and september)...
Is that normal... I thought that the closest month was most traded?

Think hedging, expiry and value of a futures conract over time. Plus maybe someone has some sort of tip.
