if you reach your target... I tried setting an order to open against my trade but it never worked. Is there a way you can just set a target and get it to close the trade there?

It's called Limit Profit. Should be somewhere in the stops section of your SB, or as you said, reverse the trade at the target (include the spread).

In ig if you bring up a deal ticket there is an option there to enter a stop and limit when you open the trade.
Even if you put up a silly limit 500 pips away and then just amend it later. Won't alter your margin, only entry and stop affect margin, where you take profit has no bearing.
