I don't think that's a valid question. Some web based platforms (like Thompsons) use Java. And some don't (like Proquote, I think).
Also I think there is a seperate server providing templates and hsitoric data.
The charts on some platforms use Java.

From my experience I don't think the difference is relevant. As long as the correct version Java software is loaded, then you shouldn't have problems.
The machine on the next desk to me is running Thompson but seems to have it's Java missing or corrupted and therefore will not work.
Due to security I cannot reload Java, but on a home machine this would be no problem.

When I had Quote Terminal (uses Java) I could run it anywhere, even on my mobile 'phone.
Now I have Proquote (no Java) and that does exactly the same.
Woops! I have just googled "does Proquote use Java" and it does, so I would assume every web-based platform utilises Java!!

It entirely depends on how good the broker's developers are, but you should be able to get a better user experience from a well developed java app.

Check out the thinkorswim client to see how cool a java app can be!

From what I have read a dedicated software program running on your PC is the best method (non Java).
However the platforms that use a browser and Java should be OK and have the advantage of being portable to any machine.

Every web based platform does not necessarily use Java. Java is NOT the same thing as Javascript.

Whether a Java app resides on your PC or is started by Java Webstart via a browser is largely irrelevant. For example IB's TWS is just the same if you start it via browser or by loading it onto your PC.

Whether one trading app is better than another (where "better" is defined as fitness for the purpose that you wish to use it for) is not a consequence of whether it is written in C++, C#, Java or just about anything else. It is a consequence of the design of the software. Though C++, C# and Java are liable to be faster than web based Javascript type stuff.
