recieved a job offer recently... if i resigned on day bonus is paid into account - the new job starts on the 3rd week of the 4 week of notice period. frustrating.

is signing a contract that overlaps with the notice period of current company legally/contractually against the law??

doubt new company will adjust start date because its a set programme im joining.

Even if not illegal, resigning on bonus day could potenitally leave bad reputation and burn bridges (even if i am highly unlikely to work in same field). worth being the nice guy - tell manager about the job offer couple of weeks before bonus day and hope he appreciates the fact i have told him earlier and since my bonus is negligable comapred to his or the pool that he will still pay me the bonus and not try to f**k me over for my hard work over the year?

Company is a decent company and get along ok with boss. Any questions welcome and any advice appreciated.

Thanks

any advice?

Suss your boss out without actually saying you are leaving and see what his reaction is.

If he seems cool, tell him the full story a day or two later and if not then you've worked for the bonus all year so why shouldn't you get it any way you can?

Depends how the bonus is calculated, and how big.

If there's a set formula, and it can't be altered tell your boss in advance. If it's up to your boss to decide what split of the pool you get, under no circumstances should you tell him in advance - it would be an odd boss indeed who didn't re-allocate your share.

It's not illegal to sign a contract starting a new job during your notice period, but you lay yourself open to the possibility of being sued for breach of contract. If your new job isn't with a direct competitor, they'll probably let you leave early. If it is, then why should they help them?
