I'd like to know if one can purchase the DOW market (invest in the dow as a whole); and then trade out the same day.

In other words, buy shares in the dow market; and then sell them in the same day.

many thanx for your help!!!

Many thanx ......

Yes, that's day-trading DOW futures. Can be done through a futures broker. Check out Chicago Board of Trade.

Thank you for your timely response. Is one able to purchase the dow, say, through a medium such as Scott trade for example, by themselves? (I am considering buying/selling the dow each day, and would want to save $ on the daily trades.)

I feel smarter already...

I assume you want to trade online, and then you have the following to choose from:

And the contract you would be interested in is probably the mini:

CBOT - Reduce Trading Risk Using CBOT mini-sized Dow Futures
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I'd like to do is buy shares in the dow - (its at appx 12,600 right now). Buy shares before the market opens; watch them go (up or down)-- then sell the same day.

Does E-trade or Scott trade not provide an online service for the $7-$9 trades they advertise?

Also, can one buy shares to go down as well as up?

many thanx -

The futures contract is the most cost-effective way of doing what you want to do. The DOW, being a weighted average of 30 stocks, would be costly to buy as a bundle.

And, to my knowledge, the discount brokers don't offer futures or anything similar. Here in the UK the DOW can be traded through spreadbetting (not available to US citizens) or CFD accounts.

thanx so much for the information:innocent:.

sounds like I need to think this through, as, I'm a bit confused on the dow purchase in general.

My pleasure. What you could do is open a demo account with a CFD or spreadbetting firm to play with as part of learning.
