I'd say it's more about the intellectual challenge.

And also the gratifying satisfaction derived from appreciating the beauty of the Beast.
Admiring the markets is like being up close to a dangerous animal. You have to admire the contours, the muscle confirmation, the grace. But you also know that one false move from you and it will bite your arm off.
Surviving daily encounter with the Beast is life-affirming, invigorating; like coming off a bike at high speed and walking away unharmed.

Are you kidding me?

It's just a job like any other. I'd haul these screens & the ancilliary crap up to the roof of the office & drop the lot of it into the skip.

Back to sunny San Diego for a full time gig on the beach!!

You're right but I'd rather get this from doing something more physical (snowboarding, climbing, skating, sparring...).

For me, trading, while interesting in certain ways, is just a means to an end.

Not having to work would also mean I could do more charity work.

its not really to do with the money - Youve got to " ENJOY " the " process of trading " -

otherwise you may as well just go and give it to a money manager to look after - and investing on a " buy and hope " strategy never usually works... !!
and if your into " gambling " - might as well take a plane to Vegas - much more enjoyable than loosing it all staring into the abyss of a computer screen all day

I'll go with ampro. At some point, it's just a job. And I have to get up at least by 6:30. And traders on the west coast have to get up even earlier. Screw that.

Just an obsessive hobby for me. Money's never been the crucial issue although, when things have gone well, the smile on my other half's face when the odd surprise holiday, new car or bunch of flowers arrives has been nice.

Of course, when things haven't gone well, keeping that smile intact via a series of rogue trader accounting manipulations has been something of a challenge.

Unfortunately she's got a sharper eye than Soc Gen bosses

If I ever got good at trading I don't think winning the lottery would make me want to stop doing it. Always liked the idea of being a philanthropist and would be quite happy to work a couple of hours a day for that. I'd feel guilty if I had the ability but did'nt use it.
