Hi, I'm not a super computer geek and need a bit of help. I was suggested to use for for trading a VPN but was also told it's not a bad idea for extra protection when doing other things in general online.

So any of you have been using VPN for trading and witch one would you recommend that is reliable, that doesn't log your info and that doesn't drop your internet speed to much?

Besides that I'm not to sure what to look for when choosing one. What about a VPS ? What is the difference with a VPN?

Thanks.

Hello and let me tell you in lay term what those 2 are and how I personally use them (my real job is in related field). VPN is good to use only if the network you are using to connect to your broker is not secure - like a public WiFi, even tough I have a free VPN software on my phone, I just connect using the data feature from my phone provider, so I am yet to find a real use for VPN especially on a day to day basis, except if you running also VPS as decried bellow...

VPS means virtual private server - and those I am using on a daily basis, I have a few unix/linux server across the world for redundancy and I am ruing all my algo trading programs, so they are essential to my trading...

I also have one Windows VPS and I have the trading software from my discount broker installed just in case (I find the desktop apps always better then the iPhone apps), so I can connect from anywhere using just a remote desktop program - standard on all windows systems, including from my iPhone Plus (recommending here a program called jump which supports a external keyboard and a mouse) - again I am yet to need this for a real life situation, but for me is just like an insurance if something goes terribly wrong I have another way to connect...

In any case if you decide to go this path, the security of your setup should be paramount - have a VPN to connect to your VPS servers for added layer of security, firewalls installed on the servers, always patch and update them, use 2 factor authentication, do not run any other stuff that you don't need for trading, like web servers, torrents, etc...

Hope this helps,

Why do you need to protect the money you are going to lose ? FBI, CIA, MI5 all log your information. If you log the info yourself also then at least you have a record of what the other people's got on you.

Hello. VPN is something you can't do without, especially when using wi-fi in public places, such as airports, cafes, etc.
It allows you to change the IP address of your device to another country’s IP, thereby giving you access to blocked sites and hiding your address.
Moreover, VPN also encrypts all your data, so you can safely use public networks without fear of leakage of passwords and other personal information.

I use NordVPN - it's relatively cheap and I've always had a fast connection.

I've never used it for trading though - you will end up with multiple IP addresses getting logged with your broker and that may raise alarm bells with them - because they might get suspicious of someone accessing your account from an anonymous address.

Provded you see the padlock and https:// address in the browser bar you can be certain you are secure - as all the data will be encrypted between your browser and your brokers servers even without a VPN.

I mainly use the VPN for when I'm in a public area. No-one will be able to see your traffic to your broker even if on the same network if it is encrypted as described above - however they might be able to access your files - which is the main reason for using a VPN in this case. So if you are at home - the only reason to use VPN is if you wish to remain anonymous online - but that's not really what you want when trading because you are logging into an account and identifying yourself!

A VPN does not guarantee safety and anonymity, it should be used within a holistic set of measures to protect one's privacy, on it's own it is a first step towards online security/privacy and should be viewed as a baseline building block and not the final result.

I use Nord vpn .
Got like 60% off a two year subscription a affiliate link on a Youtuber well worth it I have like 8 devices on the one sub which is awesome.
Family plan

Nord or Proton seems to be good enough, in case you do not trust VPN you can always use proxies, those are really quick to set in your Mozilla browser

Some brokers offer them for free as long as you meet a certain volume traded per month. Google "VPN forex bonus" and the first result that is not a paid ad will help you for sure.

Not necessary IMO unless you are using some dodgy apps. MT4 is safe to use and a VPN might slow down trade execution speeds etc.
