Sell in May and come back on St. Ledger's day?

Hello there traders and bankers.

I just wanted to know your opinion on the infamous line, 'sell in may and come back on st' ledger's day'.

To me, it seems that it does hold merit. Specially this year when the markets took a tumble in May. Volatility has increased (good thing for traders) and the markets have been kinda trading sideways, failing to breach the psychological 6000 barrier (for FTSE 100).

But if you look at last year, if you followed the advice and sold in may, you would have missed the 11% rise in the FTSE 100.

So overall, should the advice be followed? or should you look at each year specifically in order to determine whether the sell in may strategy would benefit you?

Any comments appreciated.

Thank you.
