Hi traders from T2W.

A student friend of mine has asked me to help her find online traders for her thesis research. She is designing a tool that will stimulate non-traders to go online trading.

To realise this, she is also curious about existing traders. Would you guys be so kind to help her out? She has only 6 questions for you:

1. How old are you?

2. How often do you trade on average?
Daily, weekly or yearly

3. How long have you been trading?

4. How were you introduced to online trading?

5. What is your motivation to trade?

Appreciate your time! Thank you!!

Interesting project! Might not the results be a bit skewed because there is no category for a large tranche (I suspect) of traders who don't work but neither do they trade full time? Eg. I might spend up to 2-3 hours a day (most of it outside market hours) in total with research etc but I wouldn't call myself a full time trader.

Hi InvestandTrade101,
Welcome to T2W.

Without wishing to sound unfriendly or rude, I would question the wisdom of your friend's objective. There's already far too much 'stimuli' encouraging non traders to gamble their money away. Most of it is unethical at best and, at worst, plain fraudulent. The only 'tool' your friend needs to design is a display ad' promising untold riches for just 10 minutes 'work' each day. And there's more than enough of those already; the internet is littered with them. If your friend wants to design something that's both useful and needed, I suggest she does an about turn and designs a tool that puts off non-traders from online trading!
;)

You are right, I just removed this question, as it wasn't that important either. Would you mind still filling out those questions?

Thanks for your feedback. This isn't my research, but I can see why you would question her research by reading my tiny introduction. It isn't going to be a fraudulent tool like that. It is intended to be meaningful for the target group.

I still hope you would like to fill out those questions. Thank you in advance.

Hi InvestandTrade101,
I didn't mean to imply your friend is proposing to do anything fraudulent; merely that there are a lot of very shady characters out there enticing people who have no knowledge or interest in trading into giving it a go. The results of which are usually pretty disasterous! Anyway, I'm happy to answer the questions . . .

1. How old are you?
54.

2. How often do you trade on average? Daily, weekly or yearly
Daily.

3. How long have you been trading?
I started around 2002(ish) and have traded on and off ever since, with many periods on demo only.

4. How were you introduced to online trading?
Saw an ad' in a free newspaper about an options course. I bought the course, but I never traded options! That was just trading. The online aspect came later when I stumbled across T2W.

5. What is your motivation to trade?
Well, money was the initial motivation to get into it in the first place. I would think that holds true for most people. Having lost a fair bit over the years (including blowing up my account in the early days), the motivation has evolved somewhat - so it's no longer just about money. It's a unique activity that very few people are any good at, so that aspect of it appeals to my ego. I love the fact that it's not about speed - unlike just about everything else in life. I'm the original 'Captain Slow', and responding to the market's pace suits me. The other little detail is that apart from my token role here on T2W, no one else is going to employ me - with good reason. And my wife likes holidays, lots of holidays!
Tim.

Thank you for answering, Tim. :D This is highly appreciated. I also find it interesting to see how and why people are trading online (even though there are such high risks involved).

Hi traders from T2W.

1. How old are you?

40

2. How often do you trade on average?
Daily, weekly or yearly

Depends on market conditions. Usually Daily but will exit when on top and fatigue sets in. Chasing daily is very bad for your health. I usually paper trade when out of the market to keep myself up to date - when losses pile up on paper I enter the real market ;)

3. How long have you been trading?

8 years

4. How were you introduced to online trading?

Always wanted to trade. Internet made it happen

5. What is your motivation to trade?

To **** off the spread betting companies (I made my losses, it's payback time)
On a serious note. Being disciplined enough to balance losses and wins for profit is a challenging. Control of emotions

I am fascinated by the uniqueness of the markets and the price action in general. This is one of those careers where you simply cannot let things slide by. You will have to pay dearly for all the mistakes. It did not take me much time to realize that trading is going to be profitable if I am willing to leave my brains at the door!
