I recently put on a spreadbet with an AIM lsted stock and IG Index had to phone through to the 'Market Maker' to get a price using a staggered stop as it was an illiquid stock.

I have always been unsure of who the market maker actually is?

and are there several or just one universal market maker?

what are the names of these market makers? the company names

am i right they manipulate stock prices as they control a big load of stocks so dump them when they want, and cause tree shakes so they can then pick them up on the cheap?

Yes, something like that. What makes you think you can beat them ?

thanks bedsit that makes it a bit clearer,
i guess the market makers are just a department in the big investment banks that own big quantities the share in question.

does that sound correct?

TRADERS

cant actually think why IG would be phoning through to MM for a spreadbet position

Trying not to be cynical, but that's maybe yet another way to play the customers?

Of course - just guessing here. Maybe they want their customers to win after all and I'm mistaken?

The market maker is the fat bloke at the back talking to IG:

That's ok then. I thought he's trying to say he wanna shoot the guy next to him on the head. Or they are playing paper, rock, and pistol.

or could it be "phwoar " "its was him " guy at back "can I have 2 meat n potato and a steak bake"

I think he looks like he's checking he understood the directions to the gents...

and, re: MM, he could have just been calling Killik or Brewin...

dc2000

I'm sure some of the MMs i know would love that analogy! in reality, some SB clients are very big boys, and the MMs like the flow.

some of the spread bet firms are bigger and better institutions than the market makers - I'd rather have IG's business model and flows than Shore Cap's for example
