Has anyone had any negative effects by using a trailing stop loss? I understand this is used by the majority of professional traders to maximize profits. Also, do most top brokers allow these have them?

If your statement is true I would imagine the stops would be manually managed rather than automated to a fixed number/ATR derivative.

I think they are useful in intraday trading. You should test pivoting in and out of the position as well. If you get stopped out on your trailing stop get back into the position if the market starts heading back in your direction again.

What technical basis is there for using a trailing stop?

Just to correct your statement regarding pros using them - they don't.

I'd have a wild guess and say that the big $ HFT and algo systems probably have technical exit points not defined by ticks or $ but price levels.
