IPad for EOD trading? Is this feasible?

Hi all,

I know there's been similar posts, but I'd appreciate your take on my situation.

I'm an EOD trader, so I do my analysis after the ASX closes.

My process is this:

Download updated data
Review existing/new trades in Metastock
Update stops/Enter new positions online
Update trading spreadsheet (excel/google docs)

This has been done before:

and:

I'm aware that this can be done on a laptop, but the advantages of an IPad for me are:

I can play movies/read ebooks as well
Way lighter
Better overall for travel (which I do/plan to do a bit)
Curiosity factor - I'm pretty impressed with them

How I'd do it is:

Have a RDM app (or whatever it's called, it allows me to have Windows 7 on the IPad)
Run Metastock, and my process etc, as if I had a Windows machine

Ideally, when I'm travelling, I can use my IPad and make my trades whilst overseas - idealistic, but a dream I'm clinging to

You guys are experts, so please let me know your thoughts:

Is this feasible?
Realistic?
Are there any issues with this potential method?
Anybody actually trade from an IPad?
If so, how do you find it? Pros and cons?
Are there any IPad trading apps for EOD traders?

getting it done isnt a problem, where i see your frustration is the accuracy of your fingers instead of a mouse and also various short cut keys wont be easily accessible. work or not it would annoy the crap out of me if trying to work on the thing is figity. if it is lightweight you want look at the macbook air.

That's a good point, thanks for your reply.

When I think about it, when using Metastock, I only type in stock codes, and I have skinny piano fingers. But I am wondering regarding the spreadsheet, how I'd go trying to update my trading journal... Have you used a spreadsheet on an IPad? Macbook Air is a bit out of my price range unfortunately

Dell V13 looks ok though...

Well it looks like the minimum RAM specs for Metastock Pro are 512MB/1GB recommended, and the iPad only has 256MB - perhaps a laptop is the way to go?

Hold your horses and wait for the android and windows pads to get rolled out properly and save yourself a few bob.

Small point but as you said you are an EOD trader why are you using Metastock Pro? Wouldn't the EOD version be good enough, and the system requirements are also less (RAM 256MB).

Yeah, that's a very good point, I guess I'm just worried about it running too much in general. You know with Metastock (EOD or Pro), how you have the Explorer? So you run your scans, come up with the results list, and then open the charts? At home, I open all the charts at once... I'm wondering, with the iPad, whether I can do that or whether it'll slow down the iPad immensely.... what do you think?

By the way, Apple just released a 11.6inch Macbook Air, at $1199, whilst the top iPad is $900... food for thought

buy a netbook for less tha 200 quid, sorted..you mightn't look as cool but I-pads are gash...

I-Pads are a very expensive and poorly specc'd computer but a nice piece of jewellery. As for trading - you could drive to Tesco's in your Ball gown and do your shopping - but would you?

If you are serious about trading then functionality and reliability have to be top priority.

Lots of birds in Liverpool do it in their pyjamas...don't think they trade though...

Seems like I should be moving to Liverpool

Seriously though, borrowed an iPad for the weekend - it sucks. Well, it's ok, but yeah, it's not my top priority.

So it's back to probably being a PC laptop or Macbook Air. Portable, long battery life. We'll see how I go

They will not be as good as Apple. And it's Ipad 2 coming soon!

I have been thinking about making Ipad my main trading device.

Good luck with that. Any brokers using flash will be unusable. Precision drawing with your fingers is questionable too. You won't be able to install a windows based platform either so you have to resort to java based brokers.. You're wasting your time with this on an iPad

Hi, I'm looking in to tablets as well.

Not so much as a main trading tool but for when I am not at my desk and want a quick glimpse of how things look against indicators I have developed on ProRealTime.

I think iPad is a no-go for the reasons people have already mentioned. I am a fan of iPad's but more as an overpriced toy than a work/business tool.

One of the issues is Flash/Java, I'd be interested to know if anybody has used Flash/Java on an Andriod or Microsoft Tablet.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Dell Streak which would be ideal for travelling or Samsung Galaxy to see if they will run ProRealTime, and the HP Slate 500 might be an option.

I agree that with comments about accuracy on a touch screen, although I believe the Slate comes with a Stylus Pen so that might help.

I think it will be a while before a Tablet can replace a desktop/laptop for trading completely but I can definitely see the benefits for quick checks whilst travelling.
