Someone has just asked me if/how you would buy a 2 year oil future. From my limited knowledge I would have thought you have to buy a shorter time future and roll it each month/period.
What is the correct answer, please?
 
Go and check out the NYMEX or the ICE websites to see how far out their contracts are traded. There are crude contracts right out until 2014 on ICE.
 
As ahardy66 says, you can go well out in oil, plus gold and some other commodities. Eurodollar futures go way out - like 10 years.

Mind you for most past 2009 the open interest and trades = N/A
 
It does drop off, certainly, but remember that's where the manufactures and distributors operate. Volume and OI aren't totally nil.

Thats where and how these Oil companies, airlines or anyone dealing with basic materials can say we've hedged our costs going forward.
