Congrats Al Gore: Nobel Peace Prize

That should substantially increase his already substantial carbon footprint and his after dinner fee - Big hand to Big Al.

PS, shouldn't think that we'd have this Iraq tragedy if he'd have fought for the presidency...

Al Gore’s inconvenient judgment
"Al Gore’s award-winning climate change documentary was littered with nine inconvenient untruths, a judge ruled yesterday.

An Inconvenient Truth won plaudits from the environmental lobby and an Oscar from the film industry but was found wanting when it was scrutinised in the High Court in London.

Mr Justice Burton identified nine significant errors within the former presidential candidate’s documentary as he assessed whether it should be shown to school children. He agreed that Mr Gore’s film was “broadly accurate” in its presentation of the causes and likely effects of climate change but said that some of the claims were wrong and had arisen in “the context of alarmism and exaggeration................”.

Seems that this prize also goes to any snake oil salesman peddling alarmist nonsense. :(

When discussing matters which can potentially effect the future of humanity it is a difficult call about how to present it so that it will actually lead to action. Al Gore has lead a movement which has galvanised political and corporate support for actions to stem what is believed to cause climate change.

Personally I do not know whether everything is scientifically correct or not and without doubt there is plenty of hype and scaremongering going on BUT if climate change predictions only have a % chance of being accurate then the only recourse we can have as a civilisation is to do something about it as the price of inaction if climate change is indeed the reality portrayed is much too high to ignore.

Agree TWI, I think it's fair enough to heighten the impact of the underlying argument, which nobody who doesn't come from a ranch in select areas of Texas is diputing, namely that we humans have had an impact on climate change, by employing some hyperbole.

Spelling things out in bold in a movie intended for the many and not a high academia conference doesn't take away from the basic truth imo.

Man-Made Global Warming Is Politics Not Science

"............Dr. Henrik Svensmark of the Danish National Space Center, believes that changes in the sun's magnetic field, is the reason for global warming, not anything man has done. Dr. Nigel Weiss, past president of the Royal Astronomical Society and a mathematical aerophysicist at the University of Cambridge, also believes the Sun, not man is responsible for changes in the Earth's climate. Adding weight to this view of global warming is the findings of Dr. Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the space research laboratory at Pulkovo Astronomical Observatoryin Russia, and others, that Mars is also undergoing global warming. Even Al Gore should know that Mars has no greenhouse conditions and there is no activity by Martians to blame the warming on. Dr. Abdussamatov believes this shows it is solar irradiance, not carbon dioxide, which accounts for the recent rise in temperature...........".

"If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000...This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age. -- Kenneth E.F. Watt on air pollution and global cooling, Earth Day (1970)"

Err, as in earth warming is just an evil fabrication by loonies that at this stage include pretty much every government in the world including Bush's who otherwise is world famous for his great love of the truth ?

Could be argued, I suppose.

Absolutely! How have they made this leap to Gore promoting world peace? If anything, he's caused division amongst nations and scientists by spouting contested "facts" as the truth.

Indeed. Australia's CSIRO - probably the leading research organization on climate change in the southern hemisphere and a long established and well regarded research organization in many fields - has issued a new report recently that makes depressing reading.

Amongst other problems, it is suggested that a 3C rise in temperature could result in the ecological destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.

Yup Craig, depressive reading indeed.

But I'll leave the "discussion" with the doubters now as it's equally sensible as investing time into "discussing" whether the earth's flat or not, and I think there are slightly more fun and worthwhile past times such as switching off the screens right now, calling it a day and going into town :)

Have a nice weekend all.

**sigh** whether you agree or disagree as to the causes of global warming isn't the point.

The thread was started with a thumbs up to Al Gore for the Nobel Peace Prize, so I'll ask again: What exactly has he done to promote world peace?

"How come Al gore has gone all touchy feely for the planet and the likes of Greenpeace have been busily getting on and doing for the last 30 odd years.

Maybe Mr Gore has seen alternatives at his time of life to think about creating better futures and in that sense he is just a late bloomer.

But can Gore use his popularity ? to get the US. to go greener is that his new purpose ?

And why haven't Greenpeace got Nobel Peace prizes for the last 30 years ? Surley if Mr Gore Got a Prize would he recognise that he should hand it over to Greenpeace ?"
======================================================================

Now then, we perhaps had a big whiff of whats coming early in the year, Al Gore is pumping this green bollox so he can get back into politics, which he said he would, never, never do.....

I think its gonna stack that way, could be wrong I suppose, but politicians , can we trust them ?

I think it smells fishy. :p

The difficulty in presenting such an important discussion is how to do it without making it too obvious you've started your presidential campaign.
