Not everyone is enjoying the holiday season at the moment. Please, help the affected family to overcome the Tsunami disaster:

Edit: If Red Cross is unfavourable, fine, but there is likely another way to help which you may prefer, like Bob donating through the local Sikh temple. What I meant is, if you would like to do anything, please do not hesitate. Any help will make a difference.

We are talking here about Governments that chose not to put warning systems in place despite the massive cash gratefully recieved from Tourism and the fact they are located in 'a ring of fire'

The Pacific rim has put warning systems in place and such a disaster of this magnetude is unlikely to happen.

My view is that most charitable donation is a waste of time as the money just doesn't go to where it should.

For that reason I never donate to religion based organisations such as the Red Cross.

The people who can help is Government and that is where the thrust should be.

Governments may be @ fault, but it is human beings who are suffering, and whilst I too am always dubious of where my money may end up and exaggerated "admin costs"(!).....I counter that with the fact that if we all thought like that JT.....no-one would ever donate cash to anything and then where would all these poor devastated people get help from?

I shall be donating, but through the local Sikh temple.
Last time india had a problem I asked an Indian friend what I should do.
His reply was to make a moderate donation through the temple as that way most of the money would get to the right place.
He accepted the donation with the caveat that even via that route only 10% would survive its passage through the system in India

I will be donating, not everyone thinks in same way....I can assure you....!

When there is tragedy, one should, if they are able to, help in whatever way they can, and then lecture them after..!!
 
But I do donate to two charities through my pay every month.

The Red Cross is a Christian organisation just like the Red Crescent is the Muslim equivalent...

I do not donate to religous or political charities.

Our Government could and should do far more than we can by writing off debt, providing troops to help rebuild the infrastructure, provide temporary housing, providing medical supplies.

Taken 47cents/share out of CLWT - a water treatment stock which moved on Tsunami.
Profits already gone to the Red Cross.

I do not recognise the Church of England nor do I recognise the Queen.

Religion and Monarchs have no part to play in a truely democratic world.

I have no alliegence to either.

I agree completely with your comments re-religion and monarchy and what our government should be doing.
Obviously and sadly, one is unable to withold tax as it is compulsory, whereas charitable payments are voluntary.
Also, individuals are not responsible for the actions and inactions of their governments - to think otherwise is a slippery slope to the most terrible injustices.
As individuals we choose to help in our own way and let's hope our government spends some of our tax money wisely for a change by doing as you suggest.

So many thanks to all of you who have kindly offered help.

There are indeed blames to lay and lessons to learn. However, with the dead roll already at 59,000, the pressing task at the moment is to bury the bodies, prevent the diseases from spreading, and bring food and water to the survivors. And it is a HUGE task. Governments are probably at fault, but it is ordinary people who are suffering at the moment.

I believe you are wrong. Think it through.
Which organisations started educating the masses?
Which individuals were the earliest founders of schools?
Which admittedly imperfect organisation has done its best to teach charity and forbearance?
It's not so much what these institutions DO however as what their presence prevents others from doing.
Please don't rely on democracy alone. "The world is still controlled by a small number of rich, white, males."
Also think of what it costs to maintain ex presidents in the manner to which they have become accustomed ;)
 
Come on you guys lets give to the Asia Earthquake and flood Appeal. most on here can afford to give something You got to remember the cost these charities got to over come. The British red cross logistics team don't come cheap. They help fund emergency supplies such as Tarpaulins blankets water purification just to name a few. The team will also support rehabiltion work in the weeks and months to come. It all cost money. give a little what you can afford. It could be the the UK one day who needs help.whether it's a natural disaster, accident, or a terrorist attack.

Even if you only give a little us 5 pound this will buy a Supply 100L of purifified water
