Because

the non-aggression principle is thereby deduced as the appropriate ethical starting-point, if all persons are equal insofar, and no further, than they have equally valid claims of absolute sovereign ownership over themselves. The acquisition of property beyond one's self is, therefore, ethically appropriate insofar as it does not violate the non-aggression principle.

and a civilised society without ownership could not exist because

ownership entails the right to exclude others from possession and use of what's owned. For ownership to no longer exist, no one could be excluded from possessing and using anything. This would lead to either total chaos, or the de facto re-establishment of some system of ownership.

On this point, I can vaguely remember some documentary about a tribe in the Amazon who had no sense of personal ownership. They regarded the various tools/items around them as being available for the use of whoever needed them at the time.

I am not necessarily advocating this as an attitude we should adopt, just pointing out that it can work as an efficient system without chaos ensuing.

I suspect the vulnerable and insecure ego is at the root of our modern obsession with property. In the absence of the old tribal structures, we try to feel more secure by endless accumulation. It is as if it somehow makes us feel more substantial if we can grab loads of 'stuff'.

That's true. I suppose it becomes interesting where you have a scarce resource which is not in sufficient supply to satisfy the needs of an entire population, and in that case does anybody really have the right to own that resource.

I dont know, just started thinking about it on one of my bored Saturday random internet journeys. I should be doing something productive really.

 Like accumulating more?
