My mind is currently spinning with ideas for my dissertation which I need to submint a proposal for in December. My degree is a joint honours- Business studies & Economics so my dissertation can be pretty much about anything that these two subjects cover- which is basically everything! I want to do something related to the markets either directly or indirectly, was thinking about doing research into one of the big IB's as this is the direction I want to go after I graduate. I am posting this because I imagine most of the guys on here have a degree and may well have done something similar , i.e market related thesis, and I would be greatful if anyone had any ideas or areas they think could be interesting to study or research.

Thanks

what do you mean by IB ? internet broker ?

there's whole universe of ideas , and you are lucky to have the net to help you . no such thing back in my day.

anyway , here's one I like : why not study what the real basis of dollar value is ?

yes it is ultimately backed by the US gov. but why should the markets care since the fundamentals of the US economy is not that good , twin deficits etc.

so what is the true guarantor ? I sugggest US military power.

By IB, i mean investment bank.

Thanks for the idea I like it, could be interesting and finding relevant material would be easy. Any one else make any suggestions?

How about:

An investigation of diversified trend following returns.
Look at originalturtles.org, AHL (MAN group on London Stock Exchange), http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...762/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-5075244-8167028

Key question: is the risk-return profile of a CTA investment superior to that of a stock market / pension fund investment? Should the pension fund industry improve the efficiency of its asset allocation and / or investment strategies?

You would need to define / weight / net at portfolio level the market risks in each of the CTA instruments traded. (Standard deviation of returns might make a good enough proxy for risk here.)

Or

Investigate the performance of option writing strategies - The Way to Trade by John Piper would provide a good practical introduction to what I'm talking about here.

Or

Investigate the profitability of playing day of the week returns in Stock Index futures. For example, buying a break of (Friday's high + x points) on Monday , closing out at the first profiitable opening (e.g. Tuesday 's open) Stop loss below Friday's low. Look at risk returns etc versus more conventional investment returns.

They won't care what you do your dissertation on. It'll be a 2 second moment of intrigue at best, maybe followed by questions about why you chose it. Bottom line,---they don't care--- Don't spend 2-3 months / weeks on a dissertation subject that isn't interesting to you. Better to get a good mark by writing about something interesting / useful.

Wisestguy, how could you provide anything other than a subjective answer to that question? Dissertation material? Not for me.....
