Something reminded me of this today:-

Some more foreign territory for some of you youngsters. Unsophisticated, but they cheered people up when there wasn't much to be cheerful about. Actually this is before even my time, but they were still around well into my lifetime.

Someone else from the golden age of Variety, but he was sophisticated, at least for his day.

This clip was from near the end of his life, so perhaps not at the height of his powers.
I first heard him on radio, over 20 years before this clip was made.

He had a cameo appearance as the Headmaster in "Gregory's Girl", the 1981 Bill Forsyth classic.
