I have seen a reference to a service called Constant Contact. It seems to be some sort of email marketing system. I'm wondering why anyone would need something like that when you can just spam numerous e mail addresses from a normal e mail account. Why would someone use constant contact or a similar service?

Because they will work with Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and all the other big ISPs to make sure their emails get through. They won't allow spammers to sign up, everything has to be double opt in and they won't let you join with a list of say 10,000 unless you can prove how you got it. Plus, if you do use a list to spam they'll through you off.

But if you send the emails from your own ISP chances are you'll get tagged as spam and the emails won't get through.

Companies like that and another good one called aweber are well worth the money if you've got an email list.

Contact managers like Constant Contact provide automation for managing mailing list for both marketing and delivery of content.

My preferred vendor for these services is iContact.
