I live in the Labour heartlands of the north east and at the mo everone is moaning on about the new government saying they should be spending not cutting back:rolleyes:.

Most people are saying that this time next yr the you will have to pay for ur prescriptions (actually a good idea IMHO if everyone paid 50p per item there would b very little waste) and that u will have to pay for operations. On what exactly r people basising this on?

dude you already pay for prescriptions. And alot more than 50p per item. And this has been so for more than 10 years...in fact I can't remember free prescriptions and I'm 33.

 My original post doesnt really make sense. What Im getting at is that loads of people (up north) r coming out with all this scaremongering about the tories and I just wondering what they r basing it on?

Yup I do but the majority of people dont pay.

It is a massive cost, so no surprise that talk of privatisation comes around every so often, especially when cuts need to be made. But if the NHS is privatised, you will get very little improvement in service, the population will have to pay more and more for it, and the tax bill won't go down. What next? Privatise schools and the Police? How the government can justify taxing more and more, and providing less and less than was provided for years ago is beyond me.

It would be political suicide to privatise the NHS so it wont happen. There is though an inverted pyramid in terms of the number of administration staff to front line staff by a ratio of around 2 to 1. As a former consultant for continuous improvement and business process re-engineering, I know for a fact that this ratio is way too high and as such there are massive savings to be made by improving the effectiveness (note I didn't say efficiency), of the administration functions.

I agree that it will be political suicide but the alternative is poorer and poorer service.

Unfortunately, it can be seen, now, that this has always been a dream that must be paid
for and the pips are starting to squeak. We, as a big defence spender, must decide if we are going to fight wars costing billions every year, or if we re going to have a NHS.

We can't have both.

Totally aggree the money spent on sham phony wars over the last decade would have given us a top class health service.

phoney wars? How the hell you think the western world secures low prices for goods and raw materials produced in third world?

Muscle flexing.

Phoney wars are a cost of business IMO.
