Open an Oanda account. You can have an indefinite Demo account opened with them.
MT4 is garbage, I currently use it though because the company I am working for uses it.
The spreads are wide and you can't open a position with a Stoploss, because there is a minimum 50 pips between your market order price and available stoploss. You end up having to then enter a second order to 'modify' your trade.
Expert advisors are no help to you, because you can't use them unless you are already profitable.
That leaves you trading with platform that is compromised.

Reviews i have seen for it rate it as very poorly with a lot of slippage and customers complaining of suspicious market activity

Really? You've, obviously, never had a live account with them. Either that or you're completely delusional.
Since when does "one of the best forex brokers in the world" use a multitude of sharp practices ("trade context busy" errors, "trade timed out" errors and excess slippage) to trade against their clients?

On a serious note however, I have used FXCM's demo platform (i am just starting out and use it simply to get a feel for market movements.
To be honest of all the ones i have looked at and researched none of them seem viable if i were to ever trade professionally. Its a shame there isnt really an honest UK broker for forex etc that would be happy with taking a fee rather than hedging against you and interfering.
I have seen Deutsche Bank have started up a forex platform but you need $5000 minimum and maximum leverage is 100:1. in reviews people claim this is bad but in my view this is excellent and means they are out simply to host the trades rather than scam their customers out of money. Maybe you guys might want to check it out, as for me im going to demo for the next year.

Sorry ignore my above post in regards to deutsche bank having a trading platform....it has been taken over by Forex.com now so that idea has gone out the window

MT4 is good, but if you want to develop your own EA, lmax is a good choice

Most common would be MT4... but "best" entirely depends on what kind of trader you are.
Personally, I like MultiCharts and NinjaTrader... but I will settle with MT4.
