Commodity question

Hi

I'm thinking of spreadbetting commodities in the near future to complement the shares contracts that I currently have.

I've heard about the CRB Index which I believe is a basket of commodity shares but I am unable to find this index on IG. I'm also unable to find anything about cotton which also interests me. Are these not available on IG or am I just looking in the wrong place?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.; also any tips/comments/advice about any aspect of trading in commodities. I'm a beginner in spreadbetting so should I leave commodities alone until I'm more experienced?

Cheers, Big Al

I think what you are looking for is under ETF's ETC's and trackers, underneath bonds and moneymarket on puredeal.

Then select the commodities branch.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but hope this helps :)

RE: CRB

CRB is a weighted index of commodities across all types (energies, metals, grains etc) published by Reuters/Jeffries; and, in addition to that, there are two different CRB indices, though TBH I don't really know the difference between the two (but Google and 10 mins, you'll be able to figure it out). There are futures on one of them too, but again I don't know which.

As a guess I would say that the "total return" index includes some sort of carry while "the other one" is just comprised of prices, but do your own homework. I think there has also been a rebalancing of the weights, with the original timeseries still being published [so there may infact be 4 indices]. With regard to this, I THINK it's trade weighted? Which means Oil/energy is like 60% of the index... this is why it was rebalanced IIRC.

the link to the data is here, and you might also like to pay attention to GSCI (there are ETF's that follow this) - in addition to the Dollar Index (which also has an ETF -UUP from memory).

As for cotton, the aussies are well into this.

I prefer GSCI index.
