Complete list of available shares?

Hey,

I'm literally just starting out so if this sounds like a stupid question please forgive me!

Having read a couple of books on how to invest/select shares etc I'm starting to paper trade. My problem: there seems to be thousands of companies and I'm not sure where to start my research.

I know some companies that I don't want to look at (penny shares, shares above 1000p for example) - is there a big list anywhere that I can cut and paste into a spreadsheet of every share available + it's price + any other useful information?

The price doesn't have to be 'current' (the start of the week would do) and it's only a start point for my research.

Any help on this would be appreciated!

i don't know anywhere where you download that information, but digital look is pretty handy for looking through lists of shares and filtering down as well.

Please repeat, u cant find a Complete list of available shares?

Agreed. Digital Look is the best I have found for European shares and the screeners are free. That fact that the OP calls them shares and not stocks may mean that he is not interested in US shares but finviz.com is a detailed free screener for US shares and that does allow you to download the results onto a spreadsheet.
