Hello All,

I have recently passed my second module towards the SII diploma and I am thinking what my next steps should be. I currently work in Financial Data as an Analyst (Eurobonds) and am determined to force a change in my Career Path and am starting to look for a new job, preferably away from Data and into Investment Management. I have been in my role for nearly three years and have hit my saturation point and promotion/transfer prospects are poor at my company. It is my first job in Financial Services.

In that time I have passed SII certs in Securities, Derivatives, Investment Management and Regulation. I have also attained modules in Bond & Fixed Income Markets (Winter 08) and Fund Management (Summer 09) for the Diploma. None of this has been supported by work I have done it all myself.

My quandry is this, what I have going against me is my age (I'm 29), my Arts background (2.1 in French and German), lack of Maths A Level (I did Artsy stuff at school again, reasonable grades of BBC) and that fact that although I work in Financial Services, it is not within Investment Management, so no direct Investment Management experience.

What I have going for me however is drive, Intelligence, excellent computer skills (Excel, VBA etc), very good Bond experience (I spend lots of time going through Prospecti) and having achieved these high level exam passes in Fund Management and FI Markets at the first sitting. I have strong interpersonals too.

My ideal role would be something like a Fixed Income Analyst for a Fund. My lack of an advanced Maths qualification and Arts background concerns me though (in that employers will be put off), despite the fact that I have a pretty decent understanding of and interest in areas like Calculus, Linear Algebra and Statistics. I would also consider a role in Operations for an Investment Bank as a possible career path.

My real question is what would people advise my next step to be study wise? I am currently thinking that I am best off holding back on my third module for the Diploma, in the hope that I will find another role and discuss with my new employer the most fitting of the remaining modules.

In the meantime I am considering the Certificate in Financial Mathematics & Modelling (CertFMM), although unfortunately it looks like the nearest sitting will be in April 2010, meaning I probably won't finish my SII Diploma for another 18 months. Is anyone familiar with this Certificate and it's gravitas? Would it help address the Maths element of my CV?

I also found this Cert from googling:
Certificate in Financial Mathematics - Media Folder

Apologies for the extreeeeeemely long post, but I would be enormously grateful for any comments or suggestions, especially from anybody working in Investment Analysis. My main question really is should I crack on and get the SII Diploma finished ASAP or concentrate on getting a Maths Cert first?

Thank you for reading

Jon
