Hi,

I'm a potential trader returning after 10 years. I was one of the very first Lobos trainee wizards circa '98. I traded for two years using VSA, John Piper Fortune strategy, First, and one or two others and inevitably wiped out trying to find a grail system.
My intended approach this time round is to develope my own system using a mix of proprietry and own indicators. Ten years ago Trade Station was the only game in town, what is recommended now? I would prefer a stand alone platform as I have an aversion to subscription based packages, I feel these just add to your fixed expenses when starting out.
All comments would be appreciated.

It depends how much the subscription costs. Remember that if you take about 3 years of subscription costs that will equate to a current capital value (npv calcs).

I think you can get SierraChart for about $10 per month ... so thats $360 capitalised with Aussie interest rates.

Tradestation is still pretty good in my view but it all depends on what your requirements are.

I think you can still get TS2000i as standalone which is what I use. It is old technology but still very good in my view.

I use Amibroker (for charting and development) and TradeSim (for backtesting).

Amibroker is relatively cheap when compared to the competition yet it offers a great range of functionality although an understanding of programming would be useful.

Albert's wizards

Care to elaborate?

I and five others were a little unusual in that we spent two weeks in the 'Kremlin' (Albert's trading room) with the Chief Wizard and watched him trade both the Dax and S & P live while learning his take on the markets. I recall that most trades were positive except for one really awful evening which resulted in a whopping loss on the S& P.An interesting if somewhat expenisve introduction to trading. My only real complaint was the lack of emphasis on money management which was evident in Albert's own trading at that time.
I then went out to Spain to visit one of Albert's first students, Martin Cole, who at that time was just beginning to develope his Bright Futures system, this was again an interesting experience and related to trading psycology. Maritn struck me as a genuine person and I had no complaints about the time spent with him. Looking back I don't know whether any of this was all useful and I haven't kept in touch with any others who I met during this time, but suspect that of the original six maybe one is still trading.

Thanks for the reply. How much did the course cost you and where was it held?
Just curious.:)

Sorry, yes I meant what did the course cost you financially not psychologically - what was the fee?
:)

It's a long time ago but I seem to remember the course was £5K, but there were additions -"exclusive" software that turned out to be an old version of Tom Williams VSA, version 4 from memory. A computer system made by one of Alberts' former students etc. Why the interest?

I expect what seems odd is that you will be using indicators??

Well I've only been on this site for 2 days and am immediately drawn to discussions relating to VSA as that was what I used previously - I don't know a hell of a lot about indicators and maybe they are a complete distraction. As you can see I've a long way to go!

Not sure I should mention this to you, but someone would have mentioned it soon.

Albert frequented these boards returning time and time again. (He must be due to stick his head above the parapet soon actually).

His first 2 threads were informative and enlightening, But he was known to be a bit vague with some of his posts, he did like to create a bit of a mystery did Albert. He also made the odd mistake but would never admit to it. One guy on here who actually knows him in the flesh so to speak, has said that he is a very supremely confident person. (Might have something to with it, who knows).

Anyway he posted on here as socrotees and then as a variant of that name.
Seeing as you know him you may want to read through his writings A search on here will bring up his postings. (Lots of his postings). The again seeing as you do know him you may not want to read his posts!

Well its ten years since I last saw the Chief Wizard and yes, he was a confident individual, I'd love to hear from someone who went through the same process and became a successful trader. I'd also like to know if there is anyone currently using VSA to trade successfully.
