There are as many answers to the question on trading percentages as there are styles of trading.

A futures day trader , trading solely off margin and keeping the minimum in their account may be disappointed if they dont make 100% per month, while a long term buy and hold investor in stocks may be delighted if they return over 10% per annum.

Many prop traders in stocks will look to target a $1 a day, the usual basket size being 1000 shares = $1000 a day.

Cant offer any insight on your other question

As long as I beat the S&P 500 (and am also in the black), I feel that I've done a good job.

So that can vary from 0% ROI in bad years to 20% on average.
