I recently went to a seminar about spread betting and I am considering going on a GReg Secker trading course.

Anyone know anything about these courses that would be helpful

Hey Maki.

You are better off reading a few decent books on trading than attending a course. You will learn more and it will probably be a lot cheaper.

By the question asked I guess you are fairly new to all this(soz if I'm wrong!). There are lots of businesses out there offering information and "get rich quick" schemes put there that are going to bleed you dry for systems and ideas that you could probably pick up for free.

Everyone here is pretty friendly, and you would do know wrong by posting up a few more questions so other members could help you out.

Don't jump in feet first!

Hi Maki,

Here's advice from a relative newbie

1. Buy a couple of books on technical analysis and psychology eg Leigh Stevens "Essential Technical Analysis", Mark Douglas "Trading in the Zone" and "The Disciplined Trader" and Jack Schwager's Market Wizard books.
2. This site is a treasure trove of info.
3. Search the web for specific areas.
4. Attend the many free seminars (*see below).
5. There are members on this forum who are friendly.

*You shouldn't and don't need to attend any paid seminars. Don't fall for the high pressure sales techniques and bull$hit.

Good luck

Just checked Gregs site out...

It seems there is a free 2hour trading seminar. Within this seminar they will teach you techniques that some traders have taken "years" to learn.

That seems pretty good value.

I also understand the main 2 day(yes 2 whole days) seminar is a touch under 2 and a half grand.

Given the fact that you have already learnt years of knowledge in 2 hours, I can't figure why you need to go to this one. Not cheap either.

Maki if you don't know something, or you have a question, just post it here. You probably worked hard for that money, hold on to it.

Peace out - Paul

Regardless of whether currencies are your thing, this is 10 quid well spent for any trader:
FXCM Power Course

This really introduced me to the concept of going for bigger moves, risk/reward, and most importantly, only taking entries on your own terms. In fact it has fundamentally changed the way that I trade and I owe it a lot of money.

Having been on a similar 2 hour free course from Darren Winters I can tell you that the only thing you will learn is how great his course and related products are. I only went out of interest as I already had a lot of experience and so wasn't tempted but sadly many in the room the room weren't so lucky.

Of the others, I have personal experience of John Barlett and Robbie Burns.

John (£350) is aimed at a very basic level, which might be what you want. I was a bit disappointed but at least he is reasonably priced (with one of his discounts at least) and honest.

Robbie (£390)is more advanced and puts on a better show, though aimed squarely at equities in long timeframes. His clientele is a bit more astute and there were some full time traders there who had some interesting stories. I don't generally pick individual stocks but he will save me a lot of money in the future. His book is worth a read too, regarding the UK stockmarket.

Lastly, David Jones is supposed to be extremely good value, especially if you have a CMC acount as you can do all 3 days for about 400+VAT. This would be my recommendation if you really want to do a course (and I don't regret doing the ones I did). £400 is nowt in a trading life and if it saves you from one dicky trade then it has paid for itself.

Not been to one of his courses but if you read Robbie Burns's book and email him, he really does reply, which is good. About to publish a new book plus I quite like reading his website!

I personaly beleive you will learn more from this site and books than any paid for course. How many people go on those courses and are still trading, not many I guess, read watch and learn...good luck

I would second this one too - for £10 it gives you a great deal of information - the course is in pdf format, so you can download all the lessons and keep them for reference. There are video tutorials too.

We purchased it just out of interest as we've both been trading some time now - but it's always good to see what the big boys are doing.

Other books I'd recommend are Dr Alexander Elder "Come into my trading room"
and Velez and Capra "Tools and tips for the Master Day Trader."
Also any of Steve Nisons books on candlesticks are invaluable for reference.

But at the end of the day - have a look around this site - the Knowledge Lab has a mine of information in it and there are really good threads around, with a lot of helpful people. Don't be afraid to ask a question - we don't bite! ;)

Every time I hear his adverts on the radio, I know that another sucker has been conned. If they weren't, he would stop advertising. :(

i got some emails from Worldspreads about some seminars. not been to theirs before does anyone now anything about them? 1 points spreads etc...any good??

A good book for spreadbetting is Malcolm Pryor's "A Financial Spread Betting Handbook".

Can highly recommend it.

Finspreads does one for free and you can trade for a few weeks as low as 1p per point.

I doubt that paying for one is the way to go. The books cannot teach you what you know yourself, your own feelings on the matter of entering and closing a trade and we are all different That's why teachers fail to get the message across.

yeah i heard abt that offer. i think they have now changed it to 10p....im not sure what the difference to them was??!!! well the Worldspreads is free and they have Alpesh Patel speaking as well as their CEO....just wanted to know reps if anyone out there knew?? might make a new post abt it and see if anyone has some previous experience with them...??
